China firm to buy Australian miner: report

A privately owned Chinese company is finalising the acquisition of an Australian mining firm that controls a major iron ore mine in west Africa, China's official Xinhua News Agency reports.

The move would give China a stronger role in setting global iron ore prices.

Xinhua, citing officials from Hanlong Group, based in southwestern China's Sichuan province, said on Saturday Hanlong plans to complete the acquisition of Sundance Resources Ltd for 45 cents (50 US cents) per share by March 1, after submitting paperwork to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

Sundance controls the Mbalam iron ore mine, which straddles Cameroon and the Republic of Congo.

Hanlong is seeking a partnership with Chinese state-owned companies and investing $US5 billion ($A4.84 billion) to develop the Mbalam project and to build a 550-kilometre railway and a shipping port, Xinhua said.

Operations are expected to begin in 2014, Xinhua said.

As the world's second-largest economy, China is eager to acquire overseas assets and resources to feed its rapid growth.

The prospect of a takeover appeared remote earlier this month following news that Hanlong wanted to delay the bid because it could not secure funding by December 13, AAP reported.

Georgia's Aaron Murray wants first bowl win, then he'll think about senior year or NFL Draft

Georgia's Aaron Murray wants first bowl win, then he'll think about senior year or NFL Draft

Athens-Banner Herald

ORLANDO ? Between bowl practices in Athens and at Celebration High School near Disney World, Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray got a chance for some down time back home in Tampa.

He stayed sharp by throwing some passes back at his old stomping grounds, Plant High School, and watched plenty of films of a different sort, including the just released Judd Apatow comedy ?This is 40.?

?That was a great movie, hilarious, my parents loved it,? Murray said. ?I think every night we watched a movie just at the house. Just chilling. We had a good time.?

The redshirt junior quarterback also spoke some with his parents about his future. He is weighing whether to return for his senior season or enter the NFL Draft.

?We sat down a little bit and talked about it,? Murray said of what he said was about a 10-minute discussion. ?It was mostly my parents doing the pros and cons. I?m just sitting there watching TV as they talked about it. We talked about it a little bit, but I told them I mostly want to focus on this game and talk about it more when I get home after the game.?

While Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron made a quick decision to return for his senior season, Murray said he still wants to put some more time between the 32-28 SEC title game loss to the Crimson Tide and making his decision.

He also wants to discuss it more with Georgia coach Mark Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo after Tuesday?s Capital One Bowl against Nebraska.

Coaches usually spend plenty of time in the lead-up to a bowl game talking about what the next step in a player?s development might be, but Bobo begged off doing that with the media on Murray and declined to discuss any conversations the two have had about the NFL.

?Right now, I want to see him finish off strong this year and get a bowl victory, something that he hasn?t done and our team hasn?t done in two years,? Bobo said.

Murray completed 20-of-32 passes for 288 yards with two touchdowns, two interceptions and a lost fumble in a 33-30 triple-overtime loss to Michigan State in the Outback Bowl last season and was 21 of 38 for 198 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions in a 10-6 loss to Central Florida in the Liberty Bowl in 2010. He was sacked a combined seven times in the two games.

?Both of them were tough,? Murray said. ?The first one, we had a chance at the end of the game to drive down the field and score. We didn?t do that. The other one, the triple-overtime loss definitely stunk. Both of them were pretty tough. I?m just hoping to get a win so we finally get a bowl win, finish the season off with a win and have a great offseason from there.?

A comment like that might sound like Murray plans to be a part of leading that offseason for Georgia.

Tight end Arthur Lynch, Murray?s roommate, hasn?t changed his view that Murray is likely to return.

?If I could guess, I would say he wants to stay,? Lynch said.

Lynch said he thinks Murray?s projection from the NFL underclassman advisory committee on where he might go in the draft will be a factor. Murray said he?s still waiting on that.

If Murray returned to Georgia, he?s on pace to set SEC career records for completions, passing yards and touchdown passes. He currently has 678 completions, 9,644 passing yards and 90 touchdown passes.

?Playing against him the last few years at Tennessee, Murray?s been able to make some big-time throws,? said Nebraska secondary coach Terry Joseph, who spent the previous two years on the Volunteers? staff.

The last time Georgia played in the Capital One Bowl, at the end of the 2008 season, its quarterback got questions about the NFL, too.

Michigan State reporters quizzed Matthew Stafford about his thoughts of possibly playing for the Detroit Lions.

Stafford became the No. 1 overall pick when he was indeed drafted by the Lions. He was a slam dunk to go.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Murray isn?t.

Why Your Business Blog Should Target Keywords that Make Money ...

Have you ever taken a moment to look at the keywords people are typing in to land on your website? If so?and this is where the rubber meets the road?what percentages of those keywords being typed in are the kind of word(s) that would denote the individual is looking for a product or service your business offers?

If you haven?t done this, please stop reading and go to your Google Analytics for a second. Once there, look at the top 50 that are driving traffic to your site and ask yourself how many of these keywords would be typed in by your ?ideal prospect.?

Here is the thing? We all love traffic. Me. You. Everybody. It?s the ultimate Golden Calf of the internet, an idol we often worship despite the fact that we generally know better.

?Money Keywords?

This is exactly why many have come to understand web traffic does not pay the bills. And if you?re a business, once the initial euphoria of blogging and traffic growth has subsided, you?re often left wondering how much of all that ?traffic? equates to actual sales.

Truth be told, this is a very difficult question to answer. When it comes to keywords and content, there are those that help prospects into the sales funnel, and then others that push them down (or out) of the funnel.

This being said, often times businesses produce content that has very little impact on either of these two goals. To give you a real example of what I?m talking about, let?s look at the main keyword traffic for The Sales Lion this past month. If you look at the following photo, the red arrows indicate what I refer to as ?money keywords??keywords that fit my ideal paying client. You?ll also notice black arrows in the photo, which show the correlation between the less ideal keywords and the average time on site of each visitor, something I refer to as ?false traffic.?

Money Keywords

By taking a hard look at your website and blog traffic, you can get a much better feel for what words are and are not helping your business grow.

As you can see from the black arrows, those persons typing in phrases that don?t fit my business model at TSL (inbound and content marketing consulting/speaking) generally don?t hang around the site very long? hence the ?false? description. But for the money keywords, the average time on site for the visitor can be quite substantial. (Note** Although it varies by industry and business, any keyword that leads to an average visit time of 2 minutes or more is a very good sign. )

You may be asking yourself why I?m ranking for so many keywords that don?t quite fit my ideal client, and here are a few answers to that question:

1. Like any business, this blog has changed and developed over time. In fact, when TSL started, it wasn?t a business at all.

2. Google has a funny way of optimizing content. For example, I once wrote an article on why McDonalds kept kicking Burger King?s butt year after year after year. The article did well from an SEO standpoint (McDs vs BK) and has generated thousands of visitors, but the keywords it?s optimized for have nothing to do with the services I offer at TSL, thus bringing in zero direct revenue to the company. I?m not saying this is necessarily bad, it just is what it is.

3. I like talking about diverse subjects here at TSL. Because I write about diverse things, I end up attracting many visitors that couldn?t care less about blogging, content marketing, etc., which is fine. That being said, if I were in a financial crunch with my business and had a need for immediate leads and sales, I would spend all my focus on targeting those ?money keywords? that might bring in immediate leads and sales.

Targeted Keyword Strategies

Speaking of a clearer focus, let?s take a look at my swimming pool blog for a second. Here are its top 20 keywords for 2012. The difference from this list, as you can see, is that almost every single one of these phrases would be typed in by an ideal client:

Targeted Keyword Strategy

Because of a targeted blogging and content marketing strategy from early on, almost all organic search visitors to my swimming pool site would make for an ideal client.

The key behind a targeted keyword strategy is that it doesn?t happen by accident, as the content needs to be strategic. And if you?re looking to be more strategic and targeted, here?s what I would suggest:

1. It always comes back to consumer questions: You?ve heard me beat this horse again and again, but if we?re solely focused on producing content that answers the questions we get everyday from prospects and customers, we?re going to be outrageously successful. To make this even more plain, ask yourself what are the questions you receive in the first 10 minutes of a meeting with a prospect. Because prospects tend to ask the questions on the forefront of their mind at the beginning (showing their biggest concerns, issues, problems) this group of questions is loaded with ?money keywords? you should be producing content around.

2. Focus on the Big Five: I call it the ?Big Five? because it represents the five subject areas that people search for aggressively online, no matter what the product or service is. Those five subjects are:

  • Cost/Price
  • Problems/Issues
  • Vs./Compare
  • Best of
  • Reviews

Just by focusing your company content around these keywords, you should come up with dozens if not hundreds of targeted content pieces that aggressively go after your best type of client and customer.

3. Use Tools: Although listening to customers will always be your best solution to consistent content that gets results, sometimes keyword tools to help generate blog article ideas are a tremendous help. I?ve studied the area of keyword tools quite a bit and am a very strong proponent of Long Tail Pro? a tool that I use weekly with my clients in helping them identify great keyword opportunities with their content.

I?m not saying with this post that every blog article you write from this day forward should be solely targeted on the ?ideal customer.? Frankly, it?s your job to assess that question. Notwithstanding, if you?re a business, and you want to build your brand while increasing traffic, leads, and sales? then a clear keyword strategy is ideal. And the more focused and strategic it is, the more ?real? your traffic will be.

Your Turn:

I?d love for anyone to share what percentage of your content marketing and blogging efforts are clearly directed to your ideal client/customer? Has your strategy been intentional up to this point? What other suggestions would you offer on generating content with targeted keywords that produce results?

Britain suspends exploratory drilling of Antarctic lake

LONDON | Thu Dec 27, 2012 10:47am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - An ambitious British plan to search for minute forms of life in an ancient lake beneath Antarctica's ice has been suspended because of technical problems, the scientist leading the project said on Thursday.

In a move that clears the way for U.S. and Russian teams to take the lead, Professor Martin Siegert said technical problems and a lack of fuel had forced the closure on Christmas Day of the 7-million-pound ($11 million) project, which was looking for life forms and climate change clues in the lake-bed sediment.

"This is of course, hugely frustrating for us, but we have learned a lot this year," said Siegert of the University of Bristol, principal investigator for the mission, which was headed by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

"By the end, the equipment was working well, and much of it has now been fully field-tested," he said on the BAS website.

Experts from Britain's Lake Ellsworth mission had expected to find minute forms of life in the lake three km (two miles) under Antarctica's ice, the most remote and extreme environment known on Earth.

They had also hoped that by dating bits of seashell found in the water they would have been able to ascertain when the ice sheet last broke up and to better understand the risks of it happening again.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Scientists from the United States and Russia are hot on Britain's heels when it comes to drilling through Antarctic ice to lakes that have been hidden for thousands of years.

The U.S. team is aiming to start drilling in Lake Whillans, one of 360 known sub-glacial lakes in Antarctica, in January or February 2013.

Russia was the first to pierce 3,769 meters (12,365 ft) of solid ice to reach Lake Vostok early in 2012. But some scientists believe their samples may have been contaminated by drilling fluids.

The British scientists decided to abandon the mission after trying for 20 hours to connect two holes in the ice that were needed for the hot-water drill to work, said a BAS spokeswoman.

Without a connection between the two holes, the hot water would seep into the porous surface layers of ice and be lost, reducing the pressure and rendering the drill ineffective.

The team tried to melt and dig more snow to compensate for the water loss, but without success.

As a result of the extra time taken to fix the problem, fuel stocks had been depleted to such a level as to make the operation unviable.

Asked how long the delay might be before the project could be resumed, Siegert told the BBC: "It will take a season or two to get all our equipment out of Antarctica and back to the UK, so at a minimum we're looking at three to four, maybe five years I would have thought."

However, he said he felt this year's mission had not been a complete loss.

The BAS spokeswoman said: "It's very possible that either the U.S. or Russia may take the lead but I think the one thing we've learned here is that anything can go wrong."

"We've never depicted this as a race. All sub-glacial lakes would give different information," she said.

Good Governance, Solution To Crime ? Police Boss | :::?The Tide ...

To check the rising rate of kidnapping, terrorism and other criminal activities, the Oyo State Police Commissioner, Mr Joseph Mbu, has urged Nigerian leaders to provide good governance, jobs and infrastructure.

Mbu made the call in Ibadan at a symposium on ?Tackling Kidnapping, Hijack and Terrorism in Nigeria?? organised by an NGO, Global Alternative Agenda.

Represented by CSP Olatunji Disu, the Western zone Coordinator, Anti-terrorism Squad of the Nigeria Police, Mbu said criminal activities had placed tremendous pressure on security agencies.

He urged the people to support security agencies in eradicating crime, adding that adequate and timely information would help in carrying out their duties.

Mr Clement Adesuyi, the Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Oyo Command, said peace was necessary for development.

Represented by Mr Alao Sulu, Assistant Commandant of Corps, Adesuyi said eternal vigilance was the price for freedom.

According to him, no Nigerian is immune from crime considering the kidnapping of high ranked people.

The Chief Whip of Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr Abiodun Adigun, said political leaders should shun display of wealth and oppression and serve the electorate to the best of their abilities.

?The people will definitely react in situations where political office holders flaunt their wealth and fail to provide basic infrastructure needed by the people,?? he said.

Mr Waliu Adekunle, the Chairman of the House Committee on Works and Transport, blamed the rising spate of terrorism and kidnapping on bad leadership and influence of foreign culture.

Adekunle promised to ensure the domestication of the anti-terrorism bill in the state.

The President of the Global Alternative Agenda, Mr Oludare Ogunlana, urged the people to pay more attention to their security as the nation was gradually overcoming its security challenges.

Ogunlana said the nation started the fight against terrorism ? blindly??, adding that military action ought to be the last resort after intelligence, economic sanctions and law enforcement.

Early Childhood Obesity Rates Might Be Slowing Nation-Wide

About one in three children in the U.S. are now overweight, and since the 1980s the number of children who are obese has more than tripled. But a new study of 26.7 million young children from low-income families shows that in this group of kids, the tidal wave of obesity might finally be receding.

Being obese as a child not only increases the risk of early-life health problems, such as joint problems, pre-diabetes and social stigmatization, but it also dramatically increases the likelihood of being obese later in life, which can lead to chronic diseases, including cancer, type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Children as young as 2 years of age can be obese--and even extremely obese. Early childhood obesity rates, which bring higher health care costs throughout a kid's life, have been especially high among lower-income families. "This is the first national study to show that the prevalence of obesity and extreme obesity among young U.S. children may have begun to decline," the researchers noted in a brief report published online December 25 in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association. (Reports earlier this year suggested that childhood obesity rates were dropping in several U.S. cities.) The study examined rates of obesity (body mass index calculated by age and gender to be in the 95th percentile or higher--for example, a BMI above 20 for a 2-year-old male--compared with reference growth charts) and extreme obesity (BMI of more than 120 percent above that of the 95th percentile of the reference populations) in children ages 2 to 4 in 30 states and the District of Columbia. The researchers, led by Liping Pan, of the Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, combed through 12 years of data (1998 to 2010) from the Pediatric Nutritional Surveillance System, which includes information on roughly half of all children on the U.S. who are eligible for federal health care and nutrition assistance. A subtle but important shift in early childhood obesity rates in this low-income population seems to have begun in 2003. Obesity rates increased from 13.05 percent in 1998 to 15.21 percent in 2003. Soon, however, obesity rates began decreasing, reaching 14.94 percent by 2010. Extreme obesity followed a similar pattern, increasing from 1.75 percent to 2.22 percent from 1998 to 2003, but declining to 2.07 percent by 2010. Although these changes might seem small, the number of children involved makes for huge health implications. For example, each drop of just one tenth of a percentage point represents some 26,700 children in the study population alone who are no longer obese or extremely obese. And if these trends are occurring in the rest of the population, the long-term health and cost implications are massive. Public health agencies and the Obama Administration have made battling childhood obesity a priority, although these findings suggest that early childhood obesity rates, at least, were already beginning to decline nearly a decade ago. Some popular prevention strategies include encouraging healthier eating (by reducing intake of highly processed and high-sugar foods and increasing fruit and vegetable consumption) and increased physical activity (both at school and at home). The newly revealed trends "indicate modest recent progress of obesity prevention among young children," the authors noted. "These finding may have important health implications because of the lifelong health risks of obesity and extreme obesity in early childhood." Durning, king of character actors, dies in NYC

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Charles Durning grew up in poverty, lost five of his nine siblings to disease, barely lived through D-Day and was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Bulge.

His hard life and wartime trauma provided the basis for a prolific 50-year career as a consummate Oscar-nominated character actor, playing everyone from a Nazi colonel to the pope to Dustin Hoffman's would-be suitor in "Tootsie."

Durning, who died Monday at age 89 in New York, got his start as an usher at a burlesque theater in Buffalo, N.Y. When one of the comedians showed up too drunk to go on, Durning took his place. He would recall years later that he was hooked as soon as heard the audience laughing.

He told The Associated Press in 2008 that he had no plans to stop working. "They're going to carry me out, if I go," he said.

Durning's longtime agent and friend, Judith Moss, told The Associated Press that he died of natural causes in his home in the borough of Manhattan.

Although he portrayed everyone from blustery public officials to comic foils to put-upon everymen, Durning may be best remembered by movie audiences for his Oscar-nominated, over-the-top role as a comically corrupt governor in 1982's "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."

Many critics marveled that such a heavyset man could be so nimble in the film's show-stopping song-and-dance number, not realizing Durning had been a dance instructor early in his career. Indeed, he had met his first wife, Carol, when both worked at a dance studio.

The year after "Best Little Whorehouse," Durning received another Oscar nomination, for his portrayal of a bumbling Nazi officer in Mel Brooks' "To Be or Not to Be." He was also nominated for a Golden Globe as the harried police lieutenant in 1975's "Dog Day Afternoon."

He won a Golden Globe as best supporting TV actor in 1991 for his portrayal of John "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald in the TV film "The Kennedys of Massachusetts" and a Tony in 1990 as Big Daddy in the Broadway revival of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof."

Durning had begun his career on stage, getting his first big break when theatrical producer Joseph Papp hired him for the New York Shakespeare Festival.

He went on to work regularly, if fairly anonymously, through the 1960s until his breakout role as a small town mayor in the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning play "That Championship Season" in 1972.

He quickly made an impression on movie audiences the following year as the crooked cop stalking con men Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the Oscar-winning comedy "The Sting."

Dozens of notable portrayals followed. He was the would-be suitor of Dustin Hoffman, posing as a female soap opera star in "Tootsie;" the infamous seller of frog legs in "The Muppet Movie;" and Chief Brandon in Warren Beatty's "Dick Tracy." He played Santa Claus in four different movies made for television and was the pope in the TV film "I Would be Called John: Pope John XXIII."

"I never turned down anything and never argued with any producer or director," Durning told The Associated Press in 2008, when he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Other films included "The Front Page," ''The Hindenburg," ''Breakheart Pass," ''North Dallas Forty," ''Starting Over," ''Tough Guys," ''Home for the Holidays," ''Spy Hard" and 'O Brother Where Art Thou?"

Durning also did well in television as a featured performer as well as a guest star. He appeared in the short-lived series "The Cop and the Kid" (1975), "Eye to Eye" (1985) and "First Monday" (2002) as well as the four-season "Evening Shade" in the 1990s.

"If I'm not in a part, I drive my wife crazy," he acknowledged during a 1997 interview. "I'll go downstairs to get the mail, and when I come back I'll say, 'Any calls for me?'"

Durning's rugged early life provided ample material on which to base his later portrayals. He was born into an Irish family of 10 children in 1923, in Highland Falls, N.Y., a town near West Point. His father was unable to work, having lost a leg and been gassed during World War I, so his mother supported the family by washing the uniforms of West Point cadets.

The younger Durning himself would barely survive World War II.

He was among the first wave of U.S. soldiers to land at Normandy during the D-Day invasion and the only member of his Army unit to survive. He killed several Germans and was wounded in the leg. Later he was bayoneted by a young German soldier whom he killed with a rock. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and survived a massacre of prisoners.

In later years, he refused to discuss the military service for which he was awarded the Silver Star and three Purple Hearts.

"Too many bad memories," he told an interviewer in 1997. "I don't want you to see me crying."

Tragedy also stalked other members of his family. Durning was 12 when his father died, and five of his sisters lost their lives to smallpox and scarlet fever.

A high school counselor told him he had no talent for art, languages or math and should learn office skills. But after seeing "King Kong" and some of James Cagney's films, Durning knew what he wanted to do.

Leaving home at 16, he worked in a munitions factory, on a slag heap and in a barbed-wire factory.

Durning and his first wife had three children before divorcing in 1972. In 1974, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Amelio.

He is survived by his children, Michele, Douglas and Jeannine. The family planned to have a private family service and burial at Arlington National Cemetery.

Google Apps makes gains on Microsoft Office

Google Apps was long seen as too lightweight to be a competitor to Microsoft Office. But Google Apps has added features and maintained a low price over the years, and now the cloud software suite is starting to tempt companies away from Microsoft Office.

By Jeff Ward-Bailey,?Contributor / December 26, 2012

More and more companies are considering the cloud-based Google Apps suite as a serious competitor to Microsoft Office. Here, a city bus in Los Angeles shows an advertisement for the Microsoft Surface tablet.

For years, Microsoft Office was widely considered to be the way for businesses to get "serious" work done. Google Apps, the cloud-based office suite, wasn't generally thought of as being stable or full-featured enough for company use. But as Google Apps has matured, more and more companies have noticed -- and in 2012 Microsoft found its core business base eroding as offices jumped ship to Google.

Google has been promoting its software for business use since 2006, focusing mainly on small businesses that didn't need all the features of Microsoft Office. Now, The New York Times' Quentin Hardy reports, big companies are starting to notice Google as well. New Google Apps clients in 2012 included Hoffman-La Roche, a Swiss drug company with over 80,000 workers, and the U.S. Interior Department, where 90,000 employees use Google Apps.

Google's pricing is a big mark in its favor with businesses. The Google Apps suite, which includes word-processing, data-entry, spreadsheet, and presentation programs, has added features at a steady pace for several years, but the price of the software -- $50 a year for each business user -- has stayed the same. By contrast, Microsoft Office will cost $400 a year for each business user in 2013, although the Times notes that many companies pay half that with bulk discounts.

Microsoft hasn't ignored the cloud-software trend, though. Last year it released Office 365, an online version of its venerable software suite, which costs between $72 and $240 per year for each user, depending on how many features are needed. Julia White, a manager in Microsoft's business division, says Office 365 is "on track to be [Microsoft's] fastest-growing business," according to the Times, although the company hasn't released figures on usage. In late 2011 and early 2012 Microsoft's business divison made almost $24 billion -- but that revenue came almost entirely from conventional Office software that runs on computers located on companies' premises.

Google announced this summer that more than five million businesses were using its Apps suite, although nearly all of those companies have ten or fewer employees. So big companies like Hoffman-La Roche aren't jumping to Google Apps en masse, although the Times notes that Google won 23 of the 42 large government contracts for which it competed with Microsoft in 2012, compared with 10 for Microsoft.

Neither company is boasting about its total number of enterprise users, and it would be inaccurate to suggest that Microsoft is hemorrhaging business customers. But as companies put more stock in online collaboration, Microsoft will have to find ways to make Office 365 more attractive -- or come up with another strategy to tempt businesses away from Google.

Megacity China: the ultimate in urban migration

Joanna Carver, reporter

NO, YOU haven't slipped into a dream within a dream within a dream. This megacity, which you'd be forgiven for thinking is the dream-limbo city featured in the movie Inception, is Qingdao. It won the accolade of being China's most liveable city in 2009 and 2011. It is home to 8.7 million people. One of the main criteria for the prize is that the city must have a beautiful environment.

Chinese slang for urban sprawl is tan da bing, which means "spreading pancake". The pancake sure has spread rapidly since the country's economic reforms of the 1970s and 80s. These reforms have caused the middle class in China to steadily grow, and led to much of the rural population migrating to cities. By 2025, it is estimated that a total of 1 billion Chinese will live in urban areas. As of now, the country has at least 160 cities with over 1 million people. The US has nine.

Of course this means more housing, more public transportation and consequently more pollution. It's home to a number of cement and coal factories spewing filth into the atmosphere. (Qing, ironically, translates as "lush" or "green".)

Only 1 per cent of China's urban population is breathing air considered clean by European Union standards. According to the World Bank, about 375,000 people a year die prematurely because of horrendous air quality, with another 60,000 dying early due to unclean drinking water.

China aims to generate 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, so in August this year its government committed to spending $290 billion to help achieve that. The country is now the world's largest maker of wind turbines and is increasingly focused on solar and nuclear energy. The goal is to clear the skies over the spreading pancake, not to stop the spread itself.

making social media effective for a non-profit organization ...

shutterstock_72929281Non-profit organizations such as charities and community service organizations have a lot to gain from social media in the same way that for-profit business does. The format can increase the public?s awareness of an organization?s goals and activities very quickly, and it also has the potential for very inexpensive but wide-reaching marketing for financial support. That said, social media?s benefits for a non-profit organization still have to be measured the same way they are for a business; the energy and resource put into the effort should have a metric that shows a return on the investment. However, unlike a for-profit business, the metrics and results that benefit a non-profit can many times be returns other than just cash.

A Great Awareness Building Tool

There is no question that if used correctly social media tools can help an organization build a large amount of public awareness and following. Much depends on how well the content is developed via specific tools, but if the public connects the information can then be spread exponentially in a viral manner, building a greater following. As a result, there is no set standard for how each non-profit should use social media; the tool?s effectiveness depends on each user?s input and content. After all, social media is technically just an Internet platform for sharing information, images and reading.

Consistent Commitment is Needed for Good Results

Unlike normal marketing campaigns, however, social media tools require ongoing, permanent resource commitment to be effective. The non-profit needs to have an overall message to convey, and every post should be tied into that umbrella message. Further, a dedicated staff or resources needs to be assigned to the work of developing content, posting material, and responding to social media commentary from readers to keep the online community development going. Otherwise, the work will just fall flat. The most successful social media campaigns are regularly engaged with readers and regularly providing new material, drawing people to the given organization for more involvement.

Good Metrics are Needed to See Success

For profit businesses measure success by how much net profit is earned in a time period and how big a company grows with new markets. In the non-profit world, gains and success can be far more than just money, although charity and donations are always welcome. Non-profit event turnout, increases in supporter sign-ups, letter campaigns, and volunteer support are all real, countable responses to social media campaigns that non-profits can use as a success determination. Granted, cash support should be counted as well, but it is not the only practical measurement available for the impact of social media.

Desired Results

Depending on what a non-profit is hoping to get out of social media efforts, a feedback review should be regularly applied. After a major event, the organization should regularly compare the social media effort with the results per the metrics noted above. Based on the results, the organization can then usually see what needs to be changed to make social media a more effective tool for the non-profit?s purposes. This refinement is important so that resources are spent chasing down issues that don?t serve the organization well. In this regard then social media can be regularly improved as a supporting tool for the organization?s goals.

Bill Bennett, Former Education Secretary, Says Schools Should Consider Arming Employees

In the wake of the Newtown, Conn., mass shooting that claimed 26 lives Friday, former Education Secretary Bill Bennett said Sunday that schools should possibly consider arming certain employees to prevent attacks.

"Let's remember the good things here: the heroism of those teachers and that principal," Bennett said on "Meet the Press." "And I'm not so sure -- and I'm sure I'll get mail for this -- I'm not so sure I wouldn't want one person in a school armed, ready for this kind of thing."

"The principal lunged at this guy," Bennett, who served as education secretary under Ronald Reagan, went on. "The school psychologist lunged at the guy. It has to be someone who's trained, responsible. But, my god, if you can prevent this kind of thing, I think you ought to."

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers union, advised against arming school employees.

"Schools have to be safe sanctuaries," she said. "We need to actually stop this routine view that just having more guns will actually make people safer. We are opposed to having someone who has access to guns."

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) also said more guns weren't the answer.

"Is this the way we want America to go?" Feinstein said. "In other words, the rights of the few overcome the safety of the majority? I don't think so."

Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook School has launched a national debate on gun control, with Feinstein announcing Sunday that she will introduce a bill to ban assault weapons on the first day of the new Congress. The massacre has also renewed a discussion on school security, with Newtown now the second-deadliest school shooting in U.S. history, behind Virginia Tech.

Feinstein laid out details of her bill on Sunday, saying, "it will ban the sale, the transfer, the importation and the possession, not retroactively, but prospectively," and also ban the sale of clips of more than ten bullets. "The purpose of this bill is to get ... weapons of war off the streets," she said.

A previous assault weapons ban was signed into law in 1994 but expired ten years later.
