ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? Flames eat through the second story of a home in Colorado as a car sits in the driveway. In the background, an entire neighborhood glows orange as it goes up in flames.

A wall of fire consumes the front of a home as a lone firefighter shoots futilely blasts it with water.

A heavy air tanker working to slow the flames is dwarfed as a massive plume of smoke looms in the background.

The dramatic images provide just a glimpse of this year's fire season ? one that has broken records in New Mexico, forced thousands of people to flee their homes in Colorado and left an ashy, black scar across more than 1.6 million acres of the nation's forests.

"It's been characterized that fire is war, and I suppose in a sense it can be characterized like that," said Tom Harbour, director of fire and aviation management for the U.S. Forest Service.

Holed up in makeshift war rooms packed into school gymnasiums or nondescript warehouses on the fringes of wildfires burning around the West, incident commanders spend nearly every waking hour huddled around big maps, looking at computer screens or glued to the radio, trying to plot their next move.

Their decisions come after pouring over intelligence that's flooding in from crew leaders on the fire lines, weather forecasters, fuels analysts and experts who know the terrain.

Elsewhere, teams of specialists surrounded by computers, monitors tuned into the news and maps smooth out the logistics of shuffling firefighters and equipment around the country. They tap into databases that list the nation's resources and every firefighter who's qualified to fight wildfires.

There are currently thousands of firefighters on the front lines, from Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona to Utah and Montana. Hundreds of engines, air tankers and helicopters have been mobilized.

"We've got competition for firefighting assets, but we're still at a point where we've got lots of available assets to mix and match on individual incidents," Harbour told The Associated Press in a phone interview.

The National Interagency Fire Center on Wednesday ratcheted up the nation's wildfire preparedness level one notch to the second highest level. There are five levels in all, and ever since it hit No. 3, staffers say it's been "a beehive of activity."

This makes for only the third time in the last 20 years the nation has reached this level by late June, with the others coming in 2008 and 2002, another highly destructive year for wildfires in Colorado and the Southwest.

"This is one of the busier June's we've had in quite a while," said Kari Boyd-Peak, a NIFC spokeswoman in Boise, Idaho. She said that while all resources requested are currently being provided to tackle existing fires, shortages can't be ruled out if the weather doesn't cooperate.

"If conditions stay this way, and we get more fires, and these get worse, we could get to that point soon," she said.

Nationally, 60 percent of teams that handle dangerous, complex fires have been dispatched.

Of roughly 15,000 firefighting personnel nationwide ? including everyone from the people on crews digging the actual fire lines to public information officers ? more than 8,800 have been deployed.

Colorado's High Park Fire in Larimer County, where flames have destroyed more than 300 structures, is requiring the most manpower, with more than 1,300 personnel and 103 fire engines, along with aircraft. The Waldo Canyon Fire near Colorado Springs has more than 1,000 firefighters attempting to stop the flames from burning more homes, with almost 350 homes estimated lost by late Thursday.

In New Mexico, more than 300 firefighters continue working on record-setting blazes that have been burning for weeks ? one that has destroyed more than 240 homes and another that has blackened 465 square miles.

Despite some criticism, Harbour said the U.S. Forest Service has been working to position resources where they're needed most.

There's a difference between what incident commanders want and what they need to fight a fire effectively, he said. For example, a commander's order for 10 hot shot crews ? among the most elite firefighters ? might be filled instead with a mix of hot shots and initial attack crews, which can be just as formidable but with less experience.

Eighteen large air tankers, 170 helicopters and a number of single-engine air tankers are assigned to wildfires across the region. A large DC-10 air tanker capable of carrying 11,700 gallons of fire retardant is also on call, and four military C-130 tankers are positioned to cover the blazes burning near Colorado Springs and Fort Collins as well as the entire Front Range if more fires break out.

Overall, there have been fewer fires and less acreage burned for the first six months of the year than there was for the same period last year. Some states are seeing fires earlier this year, but Harbour said there are still resources in reserve.

"With over 10,000 firefighters in the Forest Service and the ability to get over 700 aircraft of all types, we're feeling cautiously confident when you look at the season as a whole," he said.

Once an incident commander, Harbour said he understands the urgency felt by the firefighters on the ground and the heartache of residents who are watching their homes burn.

Homes can be rebuilt and more firefighters and pilots can be trained for future seasons, but Harbour said land managers and communities that border dry forests and woodlands need to get to the root of what's resulting in fires that are making 10-mile runs in one day or doubling in size overnight.

"We've got to ask ourselves why these kinds of fires are happening and why so many homes are burning," he said. "And we've got to remind ourselves that response ? a good, strong, effective and aggressive response ? is just one part of the triangle."

Tips for Successful Business Management | Pop Culture Editor

Tips and Tricks that Will Help you Succeed as a Business Management Tycoon

If you ask any manager, you will get all kinds of positive affirmations about the value of business management practices that are oriented toward positive results. There is more than enough lip service when it comes to these kinds of topics. They will cost you quite a bit of cash, and time out of your day, good managers and ideas into the works. Paying the money necessary to get the best ROI is something you need to do if you want to succeed. You have to make great decisions, especially in regard to the success of the company. Sometimes, you will see managers cast aside opportunities in their quest for profits for the company. Socrates Theme

There are plenty of good examples and bad examples when it comes to management. Since this is about successful management principles, then look at how and when you offer feedback. Do not focus solely on criticism or corrective feedback, offer some positive feedback too.

Sure, the people you hire are simply doing the things you are paying them to do. But it will go far to also remind them they are doing things right. All of your feedback needs to be constructive as well as positive. If the goal is to correct actions, tell them specifically what you want them to do and how you want them to actually do it. There are micro-managers in this world who feel like no one else can do it as well as they can. This means that, instead of stepping fully into the role of management, you are continuing to be a regular worker. What you must do is an honest self assessment of your behavior and then respond to it. There are people who are working for you who were hired to do specific things. So work hard to believe in them and then let them do the jobs they were hired to do. You can fine tune some things such as processes, but getting your hands involved is not what managers are supposed to do. Eye Floaters No More

Most managers have a feeling or care about wanting to be accepted or be seen as a good person. As a manager, though, you need to maintain a certain distance between yourself and your employees. It?s quite likely you have observed a manager who got too attached and there were problems. If you become too close with someone in your department, then that can trigger negative emotions in others. You could also find yourself in a situation where you have to discipline that person which will lead to huge pressure. You can be open and polite but don?t overdo it.

If you are a successful business manager you already know that there is no such thing as a problem that does not have a solution. There are a lot of times when managers are faced with all sorts of unusual circumstances that they need to deal with right away. So work on being more flexible and learning how to quickly switch gears if a situation warrants it. All the while you must exert your managerial style and presence. Consistency is key when it comes to managerial affairs.

Egypt to announce election results Sunday

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt will release results from disputed presidential elections Sunday, the country's top elections commission official said ? an announcement that will put an end to nerve-wracking uncertainty about who is the official winner, but promises no resolution to the power struggles between Islamists, the military and other factions.

A gathering of secular-leaning politicians criticized on Saturday what they said was U.S. meddling on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood, which has claimed victory. Other secularists have stood behind the Islamist group, calling it the likely legitimate winner and the best hope in the current circumstances against continued military domination of the country.

The dispute highlights how the country has been split into deeply polarized camps since the June 16-17 runoff vote between the Muslim Brotherhood's candidate Mohammed Morsi and ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq, whose campaign also says he has won by a narrow margin.

Many Egyptians have rallied behind Morsi as a chance to finally rid the country of the old Mubarak regime, while others support Shafiq as the best bet to counter Islamists and restore order after a year of protests, economic hardship, and fear about crime and continued instability.

But there is little hope that the results will produce an end to 16 months of political turmoil. A Morsi victory will likely see the new civilian government fight for its authority against a military that has ensured that its powers persist past the transition. A Shafiq victory will be seen by large sections of the public as illegitimate, as he is perceived as the favored candidate of the military rulers that appointed the election commission.

The commission postponed official results that had been scheduled to be announced on Thursday, leading to speculation that the military rulers are using those results as a bargaining chip in backroom negotiations with the Brotherhood about post-election division of powers.

In addition to a Morsi or Shafiq victory, a third possibility is that Egypt remains in political limbo: The elections commission may decide to annul the runoff vote and call for new elections in some or all constituencies due to allegations of irregularities by both sides.

Farouk Sultan, the head of the Supreme Presidential Election Commission, said Saturday the results would be announced the next day but did not give further details.

Underlying the tensions are a series of rulings and decrees just before and during the vote that have been perceived as a push by the military to monopolize power and leave the president with only limited authority.

The military, which took over after Mubarak's ouster, has pledged to hand over power to civilian rule by July 1. But on June 15, the country's highest court dissolved the country's Islamist-led parliament, calling the law under which it had been elected unconstitutional. Two days later the generals issued a declaration in which they gave themselves legislative powers, including control over drafting a constitution.

Brotherhood leaders say the military is holding the election results hostage to get the movement to accept the power grab.

On Saturday, Maj. General Mahmdouh Shaheen, a member of the ruling council and its legal adviser, would not comment on negotiations with the Brotherhood. He said there are no plans to amend the constitutional declaration entrenching the executive and legislative powers of the generals.

"There is no amending of the constitutional declaration. It is just like the constitution," he told The Associated Press.

The Brotherhood meanwhile has compiled what it says is a detailed breakdown of election results proving Morsi's victory. Leaders of the Islamist group have called their followers to Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the 2011 uprising that overthrew Mubarak. Along with some secular-leaning activist groups, the protesters have vowed "a new revolution" if Shafiq is the winner, claiming that a loss would prove that election fraud was orchestrated by the military.

The ruling generals accused Islamists of stirring tension and threatened to crack down on any violence by any group unhappy with the election outcome.

For the sixth straight day, thousands of Morsi supporters and critics of the military held a rally in Tahrir Square, endorsing his victory and calling on the military to rescind its recent decisions and restore the dissolved parliament.

Across town, thousands of supporters of Shafiq and the military held a parallel rally in Nasr City, north of Cairo, outside the parade reviewing stands where former president Anwar Sadat was assassinated by radical Islamists in 1981. This was the largest show of force by pro-Shafiq, pro-military demonstrators since the election.

They raised Egyptian flags and posters of Shafiq and chanted, "Down, down with the rule of the Guide," referring to the title of the Brotherhood's movement leader.

Rumors have circulated about preparations for violence by both sides, feeding the tense atmosphere. Postings on the social networking sites of Facebook and Twitter warned Egyptians that the security apparatus is training thugs inside their camps to use them to break up protests when the results are announced.

The independent Al-Youm Al-Sabaa daily's website said that authorities reinforced the security presence near the headquarters of the elections commission, deploying troops and explosives experts.

Groups who have opposed both Mubarak and the Islamists ? liberals, leftists, secularists, and others ? are divided.

Some youth groups and liberal figures say they have joined ranks with Islamists for the sake of democracy. They say they have received assurances from Morsi that he will form a national unity government headed by an independent.

Mostafa Shawki, a leading protester, said he met with Morsi to stand with him against the military. "We are not forming a front with the Brotherhood or a union of any kind," he said. "If Morsi is announced victor, we will be his fiercest opposition."

Others accuse the Brotherhood of "hijacking" the revolution and accused the United States of trying to sway the results in favor of Islamists.

On Saturday, a bloc of liberal and leftist parties represented in the disbanded parliament? the Free Egyptians, the Tagammu, and the National Democratic Front ? held a news conference accusing the Brotherhood of trying to blackmail elections officials with street demonstrations.

"We have to protect the revolution from those who want to hijack it," said Osama el-Ghazali Harb of the Democratic Front. "The rallies in the square reflect only lack of confidence, and an attempt to force the results in advance ... Real democracy means the courage to accept defeat."

Many liberals see the Brotherhood's newfound spirit of confrontation and inclusiveness as hypocritical. The group backed the military's transition plan throughout most of last year and was also perceived to try to dominate the drafting of the constitution.

During Saturday's press conference, liberals accused the United States of putting pressure on the ruling military council to hand power to the Brotherhood.

"We have seen the US forcing military council to hand power to the Brotherhood," Harb said. Activist Mahmoud al-Allali said U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton "is giving directions and instructions, directly and sharply."

On Wednesday, Clinton had demanded that the military "support the democratic transition, to recede by turning over authority."

Clinton spoke against the military's attempts to keep a strong grip on power and said, "The military has to assume an appropriate role, which is not to try to interfere with, dominate or subvert the constitutional authority."

U.S. officials had earlier expressed concern that a Shafiq victory could have dangerous fallout, with protests and ensuing instability that could lead the military to take even stronger measures. The officials spoke earlier on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.

Should consumers trust their feelings as information?

ScienceDaily (June 19, 2012) ? Consumers who trust their feelings are more likely to make choices based on what "feels right" even when feelings are irrelevant to their decision, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research.

"Certain individuals have a stronger belief that their feelings will generally point them in the right direction. These individual differences in trust in feelings are not fixed personality traits, but rather recurring tendencies that arise from the person's history of success or failure in reliance on feelings, as well as from surrounding social and cultural norms," write authors Tamar Avnet (Yeshiva University), Michel Tuan Pham (Columbia University), and Andrew T. Stephen (University of Pittsburgh).

Should I buy a shirt based on how it makes me feel or based on its price? Should I buy a house because it makes me feel good or because it's well priced? Should I get married because I feel like it is the right thing to do or because my spouse is a good provider? Consumers can rely on their feelings to make various decisions but what determines whether or not they will use their feelings as information?

The authors found that trust in feelings influences the degree to which people believe that their feelings provide trustworthy information. They studied consumers who played the classic ultimatum game in which two players have to split a sum of money based on one of the players making an offer and the other accepting or rejecting that offer.

High trust in feelings amplified the tendency to reject unfair offers -- an emotionally driven response that is considered rationally inferior -- but did not affect the probability of accepting fair offers. "High trust in feelings encourages choices that 'feel right' even in the presence of compelling information that favors an opposite response," the authors write.

"For feelings to be relied upon, either a high trust in feelings or a high relevance of feelings seems sufficient. Trust in feelings and relevance of feelings are therefore distinct and equally important determinants of the perceived information value of feelings," the authors conclude.

Link between vitamin C and twin seedlings can increase seed production in crops

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? Biochemists at the University of California, Riverside report a new role for vitamin C in plants: promoting the production of twins and even triplets in plant seeds.

Daniel R. Gallie, a professor of biochemistry, and Zhong Chen, an associate research biochemist in the Department of Biochemistry, found that increasing the level of dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR), a naturally occurring enzyme that recycles vitamin C in plants and animals, increases the level of the vitamin and results in the production of twin and triplet seedlings in a single seed.

The value of the discovery lies in the potential to produce genetically identical seedlings and increase production of high-value crops.

"The ability to increase fertility can be extremely useful when the inherent rate of fertility is low or the value of the crop is great, such as corn in which the production of multiple embryos would significantly boost its protein content," Gallie said. "The extra seedlings per seed may also enhance per-seed survival chances for some species."

Study results appear in the online journal PLoS ONE.

Just as in humans, twins in plants can be either genetically identical or fraternal. Gallie and Chen discovered that the twins and triplets produced in tobacco plants when vitamin C was increased were true twins or triplets as they were genetically identical.

In the lab, the researchers went on to show that injecting plant ovaries with vitamin C was sufficient to produce twins or triplets and that the vitamin causes the zygote, the fertilized egg, to divide into two or even three fertilized egg cells before these cells proceed through subsequent stages of development to produce twins or triplets.

Although they used tobacco in their research, Gallie predicts vitamin C could generate twins and triplets in other plants as well.

"Because the early stages of embryo development are so conserved among plant species, we expect that vitamin C will have a similar effect in almost any plant," he said.

A question raised by the study is whether vitamin C might have a similar effect in humans. In contrast to most animals, humans cannot make vitamin C and it must, therefore, be obtained regularly from dietary sources.

"Although the development of plant and animal embryos differ in many respects, the manner in which the genetically identical twins were produced in our study is similar to that for identical human twins in that it is the very first division of the fertilized egg into two separate cells that produces the two separate embryos, resulting in two seedlings in plants or two fetuses in humans," Gallie said. "Despite the differences in the subsequent development of embryos in plants and humans, the critical effect of vitamin C is on this very first cell division."

To Gallie's knowledge, no study linking vitamin C to twins in humans has been carried out to date.

"Humans are mutants in that we lack the last enzyme in the pathway needed to produce vitamin C," he said.

Vitamin C is well known to prevent scurvy, a disease affecting collagen synthesis, iron utilization, and immune cell development. It also improves cardiovascular and immune cell function and is used to regenerate vitamin E. The vitamin is present at high levels in some fruits such as citrus and some green leafy vegetables, but present in low levels in those crops most important to humans such as grains.

Vitamin C is as essential for plant health as it is for humans. It serves as an important antioxidant, destroying reactive oxygen species that can otherwise damage or even kill cells. In plants, vitamin C is important for photosynthetic function, in controlling water usage, in providing protection against pollutants such as ozone, and promoting growth.

A grant from the University of California Agricultural Experiment Station supported the study.

Previously, Gallie and Chen, who helped develop technology to increase vitamin C in plants, showed that a boost of the vitamin can help plants defend themselves against the ravages of ozone -- smog's particularly nasty component. They also showed that reducing DHAR increases a plant's responsiveness to drought conditions.

JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) ? Mitt Romney sought Monday to capitalize on Republican Gov. Scott Walker's victory in a contentious recall election and predicted that momentum from that race will help him win the state come November and, with it, the White House.

Wisconsin hasn't voted for a Republican for president since 1984, and President Barack Obama won big here in 2008. But Republicans sense an opportunity after Walker survived a Democratic push to oust him after he took on public sector unions. So does Romney, who had Walker at his side Monday.

"I think President Obama had just put this in his column," Romney told cheering supporters inside a textile company as his six-state bus tour brought him to Janesville, about 75 miles southwest of Milwaukee. "He just assumed from the very beginning that Wisconsin was going to be his. But you know what? We're going to win Wisconsin and we're going to get in the White House."

Romney also was joined by Rep. Paul Ryan, the architect of the House Republican budget that would restructure federal entitlement programs. Ryan's hometown of Janesville was hit hard by the recession; a General Motors plant that once employed thousands closed in 2009.

The stop opened the fourth day of a five-day bus tour that already has taken Romney from New Hampshire to Pennsylvania and Ohio. Monday's itinerary also includes stops in Iowa ? for a boat tour in Dubuque and a rally in Davenport. He planned to campaign in Michigan on Tuesday, the final day of the campaign swing.

Ryan is one of several potential vice presidential picks to campaign with Romney during the tour. The likely presidential nominee also has appeared with New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Ohio Sen. Rob Portman.

Daniel Sinykin, the textile company's president, gave Romney an opportunity to announce his decision.

"Gov. Romney, we're in Congressman Ryan's hometown. He's right here if you have an announcement to make," Sinykin said as the crowd burst into applause. Romney ignored the topic during his remarks.

Heavy with both factories and farms, Ryan's district in southern Wisconsin is typically carried by Democratic presidential candidates. Obama carried the state by 14 points in 2008 ? an unusual margin, given that Democrats John Kerry in 2004 and Al Gore in 2000 each won Wisconsin by less than a single percentage point.

During the 2008 campaign, Obama delivered a speech in Janesville. But the state has shifted decidedly to the right since then.

Walker and Republicans swept into power in 2010, turning the entire state Legislature to their side and knocking Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold from office.

Obama's campaign is clearly nervous, and has moved the state from trending toward the president to undecided.

"We are not really a red state or a blue state. We really aren't," said state Sen. Tim Cullen, a moderate Democrat from Janesville who previously worked as a cabinet secretary for former Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson. "People in this state split their ticket in huge numbers, so it's not at all unusual to have people vote for Gov. Walker and President Obama."

Walker introduced Romney and said Wisconsin's unemployment rate is at its lowest point since 2008. He credited the state's Republican legislators ? not Obama's policies.

"It is my honor to still be the 45th governor of the great state of Wisconsin. And it's my honor to be on the stage with the man I hope is the 45th president of these United States," Walker said. "We've turned things around in Wisconsin. It's time to elect a leader who can turn things around for America."

Unemployment in Wisconsin fell to 6.7 percent in April, well below the national average. But Janesville, a city of about 60,000, has lagged.

The city's unemployment rate spiked to almost 16 percent in the months after the GM plant closed before gradually falling to 9 percent in April. That is still the seventh-highest rate for any Wisconsin city.

An Associated Press exit poll of voters in the Walker recall on June 5 showed a majority said they would vote for Obama in November.

Still, Republicans are confident after Walker's 7-point win in the recall election. Republicans here point to an energized ground organization they built to keep Walker in office, and Romney inherits a party infrastructure that made 4.5 million voter contacts in recent months and has 26 field offices across the state.

"That is the organizational strength we're going to take to November," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said after the election. "We crushed the Democrats on the ground. We beat them at their own game."

The Obama campaign has been on the ground organizing in Wisconsin but hasn't spent money on advertising for months. Neither Obama nor Romney has run TV ads in the state.

Obama steered clear of Wisconsin during the recall race and did not campaign for the Democratic candidate. Obama's last visit to Wisconsin was in February, at a Master Lock plant in Milwaukee.

Is China really the world's top economy? Much of the world thinks so

But much of the world would be wrong, according to recent study. China still lags far behind the US in GDP and personal wealth.?

They are wrong, of course, at least for the time being. America?s economy is much larger than China?s however you measure it, and when it comes to personal wealth, there is no contest.

But a recent 21-country survey by the Pew Research Center offers a snapshot of global perceptions of power, and the results are sobering for the United States.

World's top 5 economies. Where is China?

Americans themselves are almost evenly split over who they perceive to be the premier global economic heavyweight: 40 percent say the US, 41 percent say China. (Interestingly, the Chinese have no such illusions about themselves ? they put America ahead by a margin of 48 to 29.)

Europeans seem most overawed by the China hype, with 62 percent of Germans putting China at the top of the heap, compared with just 13 percent who still see America as the world?s top economic power. In Britain the split is 58-28, in Spain it?s 57-26.?

Worldwide, 42 percent of respondents put China ahead of America; 36 percent perceived it the other way around.

That 42 percent of respondents are off the mark. There are different ways to measure the size of a national economy, but even using the system most generous to the Chinese, called Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), the US economy was nearly half as big again as its nearest rival, the Chinese one, in 2010, according to the IMF. US Gross Domestic Product weighed in at $14.5 trillion against China?s $10.1 trillion, according to the September 2011 IMF report.?

If you go by straightforward GDP, America?s economy is two-and-a-half times as big as China?s according to the World Bank. And if you compare personal wealth, well, there is no comparison.

America?s per capita GDP came in at nearly $50,000 last year, while China?s was just over $8,000 at the most generous estimate ? about the same as Ecuador and Belize.

Of course you could use other criteria than mere size to judge which nation is the world?s leading economic power; innovation, for example.

But China still lags well behind the US in that field too. And when it comes to how much each country has invested abroad, Americans account for 20 percent of global foreign direct investment and the Chinese for only about 1.5 percent.

When it comes to energy, dynamism, and growth potential, the Chinese do look more impressive. And, of course, China?s population is five times bigger than America?s. At current growth rates, China probably will have the biggest economy in the world (measured on the basis of PPP) within 15 years.

But it hasn?t happened yet, whatever people around the world may believe.

Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom

Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom Book Tour

Devin D. Thorpe, author of Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom: A Financial Planning Guide for Latter-day Saint Families, lives in China and teaches business at a local University on behalf of Brigham Young University.? Previously, Devin?s 25 year career in business, included seven years running an investment banking firm as well as other corporate finance positions. ?He served an LDS Mission in Argentina.? He earned an MBA from Cornell University after earning a BS in Finance from the University of Utah.? More information is available at Devin?s blog: bw4bk.tumblr.com; follow @devinthorpe on Twitter; like Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom on Facebook.

Thank you for this interview, Devin.? Do you remember writing stories as a child or did the writing bug come later?? Do you remember your first published piece?

A:? Yes, I started writing at a very young age, almost forty years ago.? My first published piece was a short article in the Salt Lake Tribune co-written with a friend when we were just ten years old.? Though I admire those who can write great fiction, from my youth I?ve always been a non-fiction writer.

What do you consider as the most frustrating side of becoming a published author and what has been the most rewarding?

A:? The new publishing environment in which many authors are self-published is exhilarating.? We no longer have to wait for publishers to tell us whether or not our ideas or our expression of them are good enough; instead, we can ask readers.? As a person with a 25-year business career, I find the publishing business to be challenging and exciting.? I love it!

Are you married or single and how do you combine the writing life with home life?? Do you have support?

A:? My wonderful wife has given me permission to pursue a full-time writing career.? I consider this a sacred privilege.? I owe her so much that I find myself working harder than I ever have worked writing and, yes, promoting my work.

What do you like to do for fun when you?re not writing?? Where do you like to vacation?? Can you tell us briefly about this?

A:? It has been my good fortune to have traveled around the world and I?m presently living in China.? My pastime is photography.? Whether shooting a man-made wonder like the Eiffel Tower or natural wonders like the rivers and mountains of China, I take tens of thousands of pictures every year trying to get that perfect shot (emphasis on trying).

If you could be anywhere in the world for one hour right now, where would that place be and why?

A:? If I could be anywhere in the world right now, I?d be right where I am: seated next to my wife on the sofa at home.

Who is your biggest fan?

A: ?My wife.

Where?s your favorite place to write at home?

A:? I?ve found that I can only write sitting on my bed, where I have absolute peace and quiet.

Do you have any pets?

A:? Nope.

Tell us a secret no one else knows.

A:? I peaked at a height of 5?6? many years ago; I?m now shorter than 5?5? tall.? At the rate I?m shrinking, my wife will be taller than I am within five years!

What?s on your to do list today?

A:? Having spent the day teaching, I?m pushing off grading papers (again) to do this interview.

Now I?ve got a couple of fun questions for you.? If Tom Hanks, in the movie Cast Away, unearthed a copy of your book, how would that help him find a way off the island?

A: The principles in the book about saving and preparing for the future would help him to plan over the long span of time to leave the island.? Although it would not likely have helped him get off the island sooner, I?d like to think it would have helped him take the long view, thereby avoiding the depression that caused him to think about killing himself.

You just got word that your book has received the 2012 NY Times Bestselling Book Award and you have to attend the ceremony to give an acceptance speech.? Anyone who?s anyone will be there and it?s your shot for stardom.? What would you say and who would you thank?

A:? (This question isn?t so much ?fun? as ?funny,? but not wishing to be a bad sport?) This recognition says little about me or my writing and everything about how important financial planning for Mormon families really is; LDS families face unique financial planning challenges and deserve a good resource to help them face those challenges.? It is impossible to recognize appropriately all those who helped make this book a success, but certainly my readers and my wife deserve the lion?s share of my appreciation.

I understand that you are touring with Pump Up Your Book Promotion in June via a virtual book tour.? Can you tell us all why you chose a virtual book tour to promote your book online?

A:? The message of Building Wealth for Building the Kingdom will help Mormon families to accomplish their goals of service to others, self-reliance and tithing their income to the Church.? Life is full of challenges; this book makes some of life?s biggest challenges a little easier.? Of course, while I?m living in China, no other sort of book tour is possible!

Thank you for this interview, Devin. Good luck on your virtual book tour!

A:? Thank you for all of your help!

Most common -- and most crazy -- possible Web domains

22 hrs.

The international group that handles "top level"?domains like .com, .xxx and .jp just finished taking?applications from anyone with $185,000 to burn. We've combed the list to see what we can learn about the Worldwide Web in which we live.

Domains with the most potential:

  • .lego
  • .ninja
  • .pets
  • .pizza
  • .rip
  • .unicorn

Domains with the least potential:

  • .allfinanzberatung
  • .mzansimagic
  • .spreadbetting
  • .hiv

Fine pairings:

  • .rocks and .sucks
  • .mom and .dad
  • .beer and .wine (also .vodka!)
  • .kosher and .halal
  • .rugby and .cricket (each more desired than .football)

Domains that support a certain lifestyle:

  • .ferrari
  • .hermes
  • .jewelry
  • .landrover
  • .rich
  • .yachts

??and those for the other side of the socio-economic spectrum:

  • .cheap
  • .free
  • .gallo
  • .loans
  • .lotto
  • .walmart

Further observations:

  • Applications for .casino outnumber applications for .charity
  • There's .irish and .catholic, but apparently nobody has yet applied for .irishcatholic
  • Someone requested .dotafrica, maybe because someone else laid claim to .africa
  • TJ Maxx applied for .tjmaxx and, in case you can't type so good, .tkmaxx

These domains each have more than six applications:

  • .app
  • .art
  • .book
  • .blog
  • .cloud
  • .corp
  • .cpa
  • .design
  • .home
  • .hotel
  • .inc

  • .movie
  • .music
  • .news
  • .now
  • .online
  • .shop
  • .store
  • .tech
  • .vip
  • .web

The deadline for the new domain names closed on May 30, 2012, but expect at least a year or two before we see the approval and use of any of these new suffixes.?

Calif. megachurch Crystal Cathedral gets new name

(AP) ? Southern California's landmark Crystal Cathedral has been given a new name by The Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange.

The iconic, glass-paned megachurch founded by "Hour of Power" televangelist Robert Schuller was sold to the diocese last year. On Saturday, Bishop Tod Brown renamed it Christ Cathedral during a priest ordination.

The Garden Grove cathedral's name came after more than 4,100 submissions from Catholics in Orange County.

Schuller retired in 2006 after seeing his tiny ministry evolve into a global televangelist empire. But after a botched leadership transition to his son, donations began to plummet and in 2010, the Crystal Cathedral sought bankruptcy protection.

The diocese bought the 2,900-seat cathedral and its grounds for $57.7 million. It wasn't known when the first Catholic worship would occur at the cathedral.

Israel to expel illegal African migrants

Israel's interior minister says it will take months to expel migrants from several African countries who entered Israel illegally.

Eli Yishai spoke on Friday, a day after a Jerusalem court ruled that 4,500 illegal migrants - mostly from South Sudan, Ivory Coast and Mali - are to be expelled. About 60,000 African migrants have trekked through Egypt to reach Israel over the past few years.

Yishai told Israel radio that tent cities and holding facilities are being built for the migrants. Court decisions are still pending regarding those from other African countries

The illegal migrants have mostly settled in southern Tel Aviv and tensions are high after several recent rapes, which were blamed on the Africans, sparked protests.

Yishai also warned that an influx of migrants destroys Israel's Jewish character.
