(AP) ? Struggling online deals pioneer Groupon has fired its quirky founder and CEO, Andrew Mason, amid worries that people are tiring of the restaurant, spa and Botox deals that Groupon built its business on.

In a refreshingly candid memo to staff, Mason admitted he "failed at this part of the journey" and said Groupon's employees "deserve the outside world to give you a second chance. I'm getting in the way of that. A fresh CEO earns you that chance."

Groupon Inc.'s stock jumped more than 4 percent in extended trading following Thursday's announcement, which had been anticipated for months. Executive Chairman Eric Lefkofsky and Vice Chairman Ted Leonsis were appointed to the Office of the Chief Executive while a replacement is found.

Mason, known for an eccentric character that didn't fit the mold of a buttoned-down CEO, made no qualms about what had happened.

"I've decided that I'd like to spend more time with my family. Just kidding ? I was fired today," wrote Mason, 32. "If you're wondering why. you haven't been paying attention."

He referred to controversy over its accounting practices, "two quarters of missing our own expectations and a stock price that's hovering around one quarter of our listing price." The stock fell another 24 percent Thursday before the announcement and closed at $4.53, 77 percent below the $20 it started trading at when Groupon went public in November 2011.

"The events of the last year and a half speak for themselves," he wrote. "As CEO, I am accountable."

Mason, a Northwestern University graduate and former punk band keyboardist, founded Groupon in 2008, pioneering the daily deals business. The idea is that if enough people sign up for a discount ? for restaurant meals, manicures or weekend getaways ? offering the deals will be worthwhile for businesses, especially if customers bring friends or come back. Groupon makes money by taking a cut from those deals. By 2010, Groupon was available in 25 countries, and some people saw online deals as the next big thing in retailing.

But analysts have been questioning the long-term viability of such a business, not just at Groupon but also at the long list of copycats, which include LivingSocial, Google Offers and Amazon Local.

While the business is easy to set up, it is difficult to sustain and to stand out. Companies must make both their customers and the businesses that offer the deals happy. Many merchants have become reluctant to offer deals because of how little they were getting in payments and repeat business once the promotions ended. And to keep growing, companies need to make more from each subscriber, rather than simply add more addresses to email deals lists. Investors had been worried that instead of buying more, people were suffering from fatigue over the frequent emails.

LivingSocial, Groupon's closest competitor, laid off 9 percent of its workforce late last year. To diversify its business, Groupon has expanded into product sales, payments services and other areas, but there have been worries that those efforts haven't been paying off.

Groupon, which is based in Chicago, also has faced scrutiny about its high marketing expenses and enormous employee base. Its staff has ballooned to more than 11,000, more than that of other Internet darlings such as Twitter, Facebook or Zynga Inc., the other fallen star of the latest swath of Internet IPOs.

Groupon's IPO was one of the most highly anticipated ? and controversial ? among the social media and Internet companies that began publicly trading in the past year and a half. It faced regulatory scrutiny for reporting as revenue the total amount its customers spent on deals, not just the money it got to keep. After federal regulators questioned the practice, Groupon submitted new documents that showed that net revenue in the first half of 2011 was about half of what it originally reported.

Though it made a profit in the second quarter of last year ? its only profitable quarter as a public company ? investors have been more focused on its slowing revenue growth. In 2012, its first full year as a public company, Groupon's revenue increased 45 percent to $2.33 billion. But that's much slower than the five-fold growth in 2011 and 22-fold increase in 2010, compared with the previous years.

Thursday's announcement came one day after more disappointing news on revenue. The company said revenue in the current quarter would be in the range of $560 million to $610 million, below analyst expectations of $647 million.

Mason's ouster has been "fairly widely expected" given the company's performance, said Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg. He was more surprised by the fact that "it took them this long."

"The question is whether this as a business model can last," Gartenberg said. "It's easy to replicate and under a lot of pressure. The question is where the company goes from here.... Clearly something wasn't working, isn't working."

Groupon said Mason was not available for interviews.

The company did not disclose details about any severance package he might have received, though it will be required to do so by next week. In a regulatory filing last year, Groupon said Mason is potentially entitled to $4,344.36 in total compensation if he is fired "without cause or for good reason." The bulk of that amount is for health coverage, as Mason voluntarily reduced his base salary to $756.72 in 2011, from $180,000.

Much of Mason's wealth comes from Groupon's stock. He owns 7 percent, or about 46 million shares, according to FactSet. Based on Thursday's closing price, that's worth more than $208 million.

Benchmark Capital analyst Daniel Kurnos said that with Mason's ouster, the board made the decision to try to "get the ship moving in the right direction."

"There was always a sense that Groupon had a lot of good ideas but no real focus," he said.

Can a new CEO answer all of Groupon's problems? Kurnos doesn't believe so. But he said a new CEO could perhaps get Groupon more focused and steer it toward more traditional businesses. For example, Groupon Goods, which sells products rather than restaurant or spa deals, has been performing well. With its deals, Groupon's challenge is to balance pleasing merchants who sell the deals with pleasing the customers who buy them, he added.

"A lot of people want to say that the daily deals business is a zero," he said. "I don't think that's true."

In a statement, Groupon's Leonsis said that the company "will continue to invest in growth, and we are confident that with our deep management team and market-leading position, the company is well positioned for the future."

Gartenberg called the way the announcement came out "refreshingly honest."

"There was no pretense that he is leaving to pursue other interests or spending more time with his family," he said.

Groupon's stock hasn't traded above $10 since last July and hit its lowest point, $2.60, in November. Until Wednesday's earnings report, the stock had been crawling back up, but the results disappointed investors who sent it tumbling once again.

After the announcement of Mason's ouster, the stock gained 19 cents to $4.72 in after-hours trading. The modest 4.2 percent gain, compared with the 24 percent drop earlier in the day, is a sign that investors will need more than the CEO's firing to start believing in Groupon again.

Rapper Ja Rule in NYC jail with July release date

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) ? Federal authorities say platinum-selling rapper Ja Rule is in a New York City jail with a July release date.

The 36-year-old rapper left a state prison in central New York last week after serving most of his two-year sentence for illegal gun possession and went straight into federal custody in a tax evasion case.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons says he has since moved from an upstate jail to Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center, which houses prisoners awaiting court dates or having short terms left on their sentences.

The bureau said Thursday his expected release date is July 28.

Ja Rule admits he failed to pay taxes on more than $3 million earned between 2004 and 2006 while he lived in New Jersey.

A call to his attorney hasn't been returned.

Egypt's main opposition coalition announces boycott of upcoming parliamentary elections.

CAIRO - Egypt's main opposition coalition announced on Tuesday it will boycott upcoming parliamentary elections, a decision likely to deepen the nation's political crisis and worsen an already troubled economy.

The announcement by the liberal and secular National Salvation Front was announced in a televised news conference just hours ahead of the start of a "national dialogue" called for by President Mohammed Morsi to find ways to ensure the "transparency" and "integrity" of the vote.

Leading front member Sameh Ashour, who also heads Egypt's lawyers' union, announced the decision and said the front was also boycotting Tuesday's dialogue.

"We tell Morsi" 'dialogue with yourself. Dialogue with your party'," he said. "The Egyptian people will not accept a dialogue that is imposed."

Called by Morsi last weekend, the elections will start in April and be staggered over a two-month period. Egypt's last legislature was elected in late 2011 and early 2012 but was dissolved by a court ruling in June, leaving the then-ruling military with legislative powers. Morsi took over the powers in August, then passed them in December to the Islamist-dominated upper chamber known as the Shura Council.

The opposition has been calling on Morsi to defuse the nation's political crisis before calling for elections to prevent the country from plunging deeper into chaos. It wants a "neutral" government to replace the one led by Islamist Hesham Kandil, and for steps to be taken to ensure the independence of the judiciary.

The opposition also objects to an election law that was adopted this month by the Shura Council, arguing that it favoured the Islamists, particularly Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

Regrets of Death and Dying | Blink

Last week, I had my first adult experience of death in America. It wasn?t unexpected, a cousin of mine had been hospitalized with?Leukemia since August (we weren?t close). The unexpected part was what came next. While I am familiar with funeral customs in other cultures, I had no idea what to expect in America. Would there be a mourning period? An immediate burial? Should I send a gift or card or flowers or money? What do you say? To whom?

How did I make it to adulthood without learning these basic customs? When my elderly relatives died I was excused from the funeral because I was either too young or I lived too far away. I thought that as an adult I would have access to more aspects of the death and dying process?I was wrong.

Like I said this was not unexpected, my mom called me to the hospital when they knew the end was near. I arrived less than an hour before she died. My mom asked me if I wanted to go to the room and then said I didn?t have to and when I said I would go back she wouldn?t let me go in the room because ?it would be too hard?. In the end she decided I should watch my dying cousin from the hallway. Now, I have seen death and dying in other countries. I am not afraid of sick people or dying people or dead bodies. I told my mom this but she insisted on shielding me anyway. For her sake, I kept my distance.

Shortly after the death, there was a prayer circle in her room. This was the only time I saw her. The family said they didn?t want to watch her go downstairs to the morgue?so we left for lunch at my grandparents house. My grandfather actually suggested we eat at TGIFridays, which people vetoed. There was little discussion of death for the rest of the day. Her 12 year old daughter was asking to go to a laser tag sleepover party. People thought it might be a good idea to take her mind off of things or maybe she should have to stay home and mourn? Eventually, she went to play laser tag with her friends, just hours after her mother?s death. Is this normal? I don?t know. It isn?t clear what she was expected to do instead.

It was decided that there would be a funeral service in the church and a brief ceremony at the cemetery but not at the graveside. No one would be there as she went into the ground, again it would be too painful. The emphasis throughout the week was hiding death, avoid talking directly about it. This refusal to directly acknowledge the death led to a funny (sad) miscommunication with my sister. ?My sister was returning from a vacation in Disney World when my cousin died. My mom called her crying and said something like ?it?s over?. Later I was at my sister?s house and she asked how my cousin was doing. Apparently, she didn?t get the euphemism. I told her our cousin isn?t doing she is dead. Oh.

Not only did everyone try to hide the physical reminders of death there was also a clear attempt to hide the emotions of death. My uncle (father of the deceased) is not an emotional man (retired Coast Guard). When it was clear that his daughter would not live past 37, he leaned over to hug her unconscious body. He started to tear up and asked for a tissue because his sinuses were bothering him. The men in my family did their best to remain stoic while the women tried not to cry; when they inevitably failed they apologized. My mom relied on Adavan to protect her from these unpleasant feelings. She offered it to anyone who wanted it, which I thought was awkward because my cousin was addicted to prescription pain killers (and had recently relapsed). But this wasn?t drug abuse, the death of my mom?s first niece was causing anxiety hence the anti-anxiety meds.

I regret never taking a death and dying class in college. I have a sense that rituals are important and they can tell us something about society, as Durkheim says they are really societal self-worship. ?What does it mean that our rituals of death have seemingly deteriorated? We have so many ways to celebrate life yet we hide death (at least in my family). This was a particularly difficult case because my cousin was not a sympathetic character. This was not a clear case of someone who had lived a good and long life. She was young. She had late-diagnosed bipolar disorder and a well-developed drug addiction. She spent significant time in jail, or as my family says ?Europe?. She struggled to regain custody of her children and get her life together. She relapsed. Her life was hard to celebrate. Her death was hard to witness. So, we minimized the ritual. We talked about other things. We hid our feelings behind lame excuses, apologies, and drugs. Is this the current state of our death rituals?

Samsung to introduce 'the next Galaxy' on March 14

"Ready 4 the show," an invitation sent to members of the press teases, blatantly hinting that we'll be seeing the Galaxy S 4 ? the highly anticipated follow-up to the Galaxy S III smartphone ? at the event being held by Samsung on March 14.

The event will take place in New York City at 7 p.m. ET. (We'll be there to cover it live, of course.)

The Galaxy S 4 ? we're assuming by the big "4" that the only change to Samsung's incredibly consistent naming approach will be to drop the Roman numerals ? will be the company's newest flagship device.

A poster spotted by AnandTech's Brian Klug during a visit to Samsung's demo room at the Consumer Electronics Show in early January suggests that the Galaxy S 4 could be rocking a 4.99-inch 1080p screen with a whopping 440 pixels per inch. While the iPhone 5 offers the significantly less dense 326 ppi, it's worth noting that it's practically impossible for human eyes to tell the difference. After a certain point, the individual pixels simply become indistinguishable.

That's about all we know (or think we know) about the Galaxy S 4 for now, so Samsung could have plenty of surprises waiting up its sleeves come March 14.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on Twitter, subscribing to her Facebook posts, or circling her on Google+.

Fiennes pulls out of Antarctica trek

Sir Ranulph's team mate Ian Prickett: "We could be in for a week, we could be in for another day"

Sir Ranulph Fiennes has pulled out of an expedition across Antarctica during winter because of severe frostbite.

The 68-year-old was injured after a fall while skiing during training at a base camp in Antarctica. He used his bare hands to fix a ski binding in temperatures around -30C.

His evacuation to South Africa is being hampered by blizzard conditions.

Sir Ranulph is said to be "gutted," but his five team-mates will still embark on the 2,000-mile (3,219km) trek.

Tony Medniuk from the "Coldest Journey" expedition said Sir Ranulph had been due to lead the team from the front on skis, and had been practising his skiing in whiteout conditions when he fell.

"In seeking to reattach his binding he felt that he couldn't get it on and had to take his glove off in very cold conditions and exposed his hand to snow and as a consequence he has contracted frostbite," he told the BBC.

Frostbite

  • Frostbite is damage to the skin and tissue due to exposure to freezing temperatures
  • It can affect any part of the body, but extremities like fingers, ears, the nose and toes, are particularly vulnerable
  • When it is cold the body diverts blood flow from the extremities to vital organs like the heart and lungs
  • As the blood is redirected, the extremities get colder and fluid in these tissues begin to freeze
  • Initially you may feel pins and needles and painful throbbing, but as the tissues freeze the area becomes numb
  • Ice crystals form, damaging cells, and the low blood flow starves the tissue of oxygen
  • If the blood flow is not restored soon enough the tissue will die and may need to be amputated
  • Almost all cases of frostbite can be prevented by wearing appropriate clothing and avoiding unnecessary exposure to cold

"After five years of preparation, a small slip like this and a few moments can undermine the most meticulous preparation," he added.

The team is attempting to evacuate Sir Ranulph by transporting him by skidoo to the Princess Elisabeth Station, about 70km away from his current position. From there he will be flown to Novo to get a connecting flight to Cape Town.

Blizzard conditions are currently making any evacuation impossible and Sir Ranulph will be unable to move until conditions ease.

The trek is known as The Coldest Journey on Earth. No human being has managed to walk across Antarctica in winter.

The team will face some of the toughest conditions on Earth - near permanent darkness and temperatures dropping close to -90C.

The expedition - from the Russian base of Novolazareskaya to the Ross Sea - is due to begin on 21 March and is expected to take six months.

The journey is to benefit Seeing is Believing, a charity which tackles avoidable blindness.

Sir Ranulph's past feats include becoming the first person to reach both poles by surface means and the oldest Briton to reach the summit of Mount Everest, aged 65.

Guinness World Records describes him as the world's greatest living explorer.

This is not the first time the explorer has experienced frostbite. In 2000, he lost the fingers on his left hand during an unaided attempt to reach the North Pole.

When he returned to the UK, he was told he would have to wait several months before they could be amputated to allow the partially damaged tissue to heal. But he decided to do the job himself and carried out the amputations using a fretsaw.

Microsoft Says Windows Phone Store Now Features More Than 130K Apps, 40K New Developers Registered Since WP8 Launch

windows-phone-8-logoMicrosoft only provides sporadic updates to how the Windows Phone Store is doing, but today, it used the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to offer a few new numbers. According to Microsoft, there are now over 130,000 apps in the Windows Phone Store and the average Windows Phone user has now downloaded 55 apps. App downloads, the company says, have increased by 75% since the Windows Phone 8 launch late last year and paid app revenue has increased 91%. The Windows Phone developer ecosystem, too, is growing quickly according to Microsoft. More than 40,000 new developers registered with the company in the first 90 days since the launch of Windows Phone 8 and there are now over 15,000 apps in the store that leverage features only available in Windows Phone 8. SDK downloads, too, are up and have now topped 500,000 ?since October 30, 2012. One thing that’s worth noting when looking at the number of new developers is that Microsoft reduced the price of registering as a developer from $99 per year to $8 for the first year during the eight days after the Windows Phone 8 launch, so the numbers may be a good bit higher because of this. New Dev Center App Microsoft also launched a mobile version of its Dev Center dashboard today. The Dev Center app?provides developers with easy access to all the key metrics about their app, including download data, crash trends and reviews. The app, of course, also features a live tile and lets developers share a link to their app with others without having to go into the store first. To make Windows Phone even more attractive to developers, the company also teamed up with services ?like Box, mobile backend provider Buddy?and Photon Cloud, a service for game developers, to offer Windows Phone developer a number of special offers like free API calls and free service for a limited time.

Olympus confirms that Sony is now its largest shareholder

Sony got a stake in Olympus' future when it made a $645 million investment into the troubled camera firm last September, getting a board representative and a controlling share of a medical imaging project. As of this weekend, however, the foot is that much further in the door: it's now Olympus' largest shareholder. A share transfer promised alongside the investment, and officially completed on the 22nd, has boosted Sony's stake from 4.7 percent to just under 11.5 percent. The share switch doesn't give Sony enough influence to dictate Olympus' day-to-day affairs, but Sony won't have to do as much to rally support if it wants action. Olympus isn't in the best position to kick such a large investor to the curb, either. We'd expect the company to at least listen more closely to what its major funding source has to say.

As cuts loom, Obama meets with governors

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will be meeting with the nation's governors as they push Congress to avert deep federal spending cuts that begin to take effect Friday.

The state leaders are in Washington for the annual meeting of the National Governors Association. The president, first lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, are scheduled to address them at the White House.

Obama administration officials warn of significant airport delays, deep cuts to education and furloughs for hundreds of thousands of government workers if the budget cuts go through, as widely expected.

The president did not mention the budget stalemate during a White House dinner with most of the governors Sunday night. But Obama told them, "We've got more work to do."

AlcatelLucent's latest lightRadio development aims to spread TDLTE across China

We've yet to hear much about Alcatel-Lucent's lightRadio since it's original introduction in early 2011, but here in Barcelona, the outfit has announced (in cooperation with China Mobile, no less) that its latest innovation could help spread the wondrous waves of TD-LTE across China. Available now for large-scale commercial deployment in China Mobile's first trial TD-LTE network, which spans 13 cities in China, lightRadio Metro Radio will bring legitimate 4G services to residents in densely populated areas of Shanghai, Nanjing and Qingdao.

China Mobile itself has over 722 million subscribers, and a huge swath of those are no doubt clamoring for faster transmission speeds. In China, lightRadio Metro Radio will be deployed in bustling indoor and outdoor locations, such as shopping malls and stadiums, but there's no word on when the masses might expect this stuff to launch in earnest. Here's hoping for a speedy trial, eh?

Firefox Smartphones Coming Soon - Business Insider

ZTE

ZTE Firefox OS smartphone

Mozilla today announced big progress with its new smartphone operating system.

We've been hearing dribbles and drabs about Firefox OS all year long. It will launch first in Europe but Mozilla also announced that Sprint has signed on.

That's the first U.S. carrier.

The European carriers will be selling it starting in mid-2013. Manufacturers of the phones so far include Alcatel, LG and ZTE, Huawei.

U.S. users can get their hands on the OS by installing it on an Android phone. Plus, a company called Geeksphone makes the device.

The Verge's Chris Ziegler, who was living blogging today's press conference at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, wasn't too impressed with the ZTE Open. He called it "an extremely low-end device."

Quality aside, this is an interesting experiment by Mozilla. This smartphone OS is built entirely from Web standards, like HTML5, and "free from the rules and restrictions of existing proprietary platforms," Mozilla says.

All told Mozilla announced 18 mobile operator partners in nine countries.
