News sites knocked out as data center floods

When you see a website go down, the blame usually falls on hackers or, more often, software bugs. We don't often think of the Web as having a physical existence, but sure enough, Sandy has shown that nature can impact websites with greater force than any team of malicious code wizards can summon up.

Google Search app for iOS updated with new voice search functionality, iPhone 5 compatibility

Google just released an updated version of its Search app for Android devices yesterday, and it's now (as promised) also delivered a fairly big update to iOS users. That brings with it iPhone 5 compatibility, but the bigger news is the expanded voice search functionality, which promises "faster and significantly improved voice recognition," with spoken responses à la Google Now provided alongside the search results. Those additions also extend to iPad users in addition to the iPhone and iPod touch -- hit the App Store or the link below to take it for a spin yourself.

Not An Alternative Fish Story? ? bookseller16 - Edgarblow0's blog

What exactly is fishing? I suppose it may be a sporting activity, a way to earn a living, although I am more of a mind to deem it to be a hobby as it is the ideal antidote for fighting any amount of stress.

Fish is an important food item which we cannot do without and we can always rely on working fishermen to keep the stocks plentiful. On the other hand, fishing is also a leisure interest and is one of the most popular hobbies.

The hobby of fishing continues to grow and there?s more money spent on it than arguably any other on account of the cost of buying a licence, fishing tackle, bait, clothes and transport etc. Often creating your own, obtaining second hand or borrowing it allows us to keep the costs down to a minimum.

Why is fishing a popular hobby? Just because it?s an excellent means of relieving stress and tension. It also helps anxious teenagers to adjust their way of thinking and form more constructive qualities, attitudes and activities.

You can find lots of family crafts and hobbies that could be taken on and enjoyed by one and all, this includes fishing.

Children in particular are keen to find out how to use bait in order to catch themselves a fish. Actually using and trying out each and every item of fishing gear in conjunction with a camping holiday may make them feel like characters in a Mark Twain novel.

It is necessary that we all realise the true worth of fishing as a recreational hobby, specially as it is just one of a few hobbies for men and women that they can both participate in and enjoy.

People of all ages enjoy fishing with their families or to take up many more family crafts and hobbies in order to alleviate the anxiety or boredom which lifestyles of today might bring about.

Fishing helps you to take in and enjoy all the benefits and beauties given to us by nature, such as rivers and riverbanks, birds and other animals. Fishing is a much preferred way to relax and take in the air.

Family together time has fallen considerably in recent years and for that matter so has the time spent interacting with the kids so any time set aside for family crafts and hobbies should help to restore a happy family environment.

Although there are many hobbies for men and women that you could do, chances are you can include the kids or your best friends in these pursuits too; it would be time well spent.

Catching the fish is the best feeling, regardless of if you catch them to cook and eat or just for the pleasure in catching them and releasing them again. The time we spend connecting with friends and family is well worth making the effort.

A great time can be had by all if you invest your leisure time wisely in family crafts and hobbies. The fun and learning experiences you acquire from such hobbies, like fishing, can make them family activities which will never be forgotten.

Fortunately, this has turned out not to be another fish story. However, if fishing as a hobby doesn?t float your boat then hopefully it will now motivate you to consider books on hobbies for men and women and the children too, to help find one that does.

The TRUTH About Motherhood Not enough hours in the day ...

not enough hours in the day, time, motherhood

?

There are not enough hours in the day. I don?t know when this happened.? When the girls were babies, I thought for sure that I was stretched as thin as I could possibly be. I was always blissfully exhausted. It was all about the babies, all the time. I was neglected. The house was neglected. My husband was even a little neglected but everyone knew and understood?I had babies. So, I got a pass of sorts. There were simply not enough hours in the day to be a good mommy and to be a crack chef with a perfectly cleaned and decorated home. I knew it, my husband knew it and anyone passing by reading the ?please don?t ring the doorbell, there?s a sleeping baby in the house? sign KNEW IT!

But a strange phenomenon has happened. I had my children in my 30?s. To me, it didn?t seem old. It seemed logical and, for me, it was the right time.? I just turned 40 and I was all, embrace the change and I am. I am embracing the shit out of 40. I?m squeezing that bitch so hard that her head might pop off. I swear to God, I feel about 30 but I have gathered some wisdom and I actually feel like I am in a better place in life than I actually was at 30. Surprise.

Suddenly there is absolutely not enough hours in the day anymore.

I was just having this discussion with the Big Guy yesterday, our life used to be filled to the hilt in every nook and cranny, oozing babies. Our life revolved around our girls. It had to, how would they survive and thrive if it didn?t? I loved it. Sure, I complained about having no time and no sleep but damn it, I loved every single minute of it. And any mom who has had a child in her 30?s will tell you, they keep us young. Hell yeah, when you are chasing babies and being pregnant, you feel younger because you are at the beginning of that part of your life. Until one day, reality sneaks up on you.

Days are flying by at warp speed. The routine is packed full and many of you probably recognize it because you are living it: wake up, wake kids up, feed kids, get kids to school, have coffee, work, break for lunch, smush as many errands as possible into your lunch break, do laundry, fold laundry, never put laundry away, pick up the house, pick up the kids, do homework with the kids, cook dinner, give kids a bath,5 minutes of idle chit chat with husband, argue kids into bed, take a shower, check on kids, assure kids that if they don?t go to sleep right this instant you are taking away Halloween, remember that you forgot to call your mom back, organize the class Halloween party for both kids, email 30 parents, watch television while checking emails, brush teeth, every other Friday and Tuesday have a quickie with your husband, get interrupted by a child who has woken up,fall asleep, be woken up by your husband to finish, go to the bathroom, go to sleep for 3 hours until the other kid comes in to ask you to walk them back to bed and watch them until thy fall asleep, stumble back to your room, go pee for the 3rd time and then wake up 2 hours later when the damn alarm goes off, REPEAT!

Next thing you know, you are the oldest mom in the class. Fuck! I hate when that happens. You might not look the part, oh but you feel the part. That moment when your 7-year-old knows all the lyrics and you don?t even know who the hell the artist is, that?s when it hits you. Or when you look at the other moms at pick up and think, Geez there sure are a lot of teen moms at this school. Or when you realize you don?t even know what is hip to wear anymore. You are going between yoga pants and DVF and this other mom is wearing TOMS and skinny jeans. That?s when you know. You are most definitely not in the same place in life. 40 may not be ancient but when the other mothers my age have kids in middle school and mine are in the beginning stages of elementary school. You just know. One day, someone is going to think I am my daughters? grandma and then I am going to fall down and die?on the spot.

I am 40 years old and there are not enough hours in the day to get everything I need to do done. My life is good. I make a living doing what I love. I have two wonderful kids ( mostly except for the rare occasions everyday at bedtime when their heads spin off and they lose their minds). I?m married to a man that I not only love but honestly, LIKE. I have great friends and I?m finally at a place where I was feeling comfortable in my skin. It lasted almost a month to the day. Then last night I woke up with night sweats and then I realized I did the same thing the night before. Next thing you know, I was up at 3:45 googling night sweats and perimenopause and on the verge of tears.

It was most likely because our room was 107 degrees and one of the littles had found their way into our bed and was snuggled into me but you know, perimenopause is where my optimistic mind went at 3:45 am. There are not enough hours in the day to worry about imaginary problems.

International Regulation Needed for Ag Swaps

Ag swaps: A tiny boat on the vast financial data sea

by Dr. Steve Suppan, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy

Agricultural prices, both national and international, are affected by commodity and financial market rules. Export revenues and import costs wheat-captiondepend on the value of the dollar, the dominant international currency for commodity trading, relative to the value of other currencies. Interest rate rules affect the interest rates for all kinds of agricultural borrowing, from loans for planting to those for shipping products. However, financial market rules that affect agriculture, and thus food security, are written for all economic sectors, not just agriculture, so agriculture is usually not mentioned explicitly in the rule making.

Follow up:

U.S. regulators writing new rules to regulate financial and commodity markets have focused on how these rules will be applied in U.S. markets. However, if the foreign branches of U.S. and European firms are allowed to continue to act with reckless abandon outside of U.S. jurisdiction, legislation to reform Wall Street will be in vain. This summer, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) proposed guidance that grapples with the tough question of how to regulate financial instruments called ?swaps,? which are traded by foreign affiliates of U.S. banks. Getting this ?cross-border? rule making right will be critical for farmers and global food security.

A swap is an exchange of the values of contracts that are used to buy and sell agricultural commodities and other assets. For example, one party holding a variable interest rate contract wishes to reduce its risk by exchanging the value of that contract for that of a fixed interest rate contract. An agricultural swap could be as simple as an exchange-traded contract for wheat traded outside official exchange hours or as complex as agricultural contracts bundled with non-agricultural contracts, such as for oil and copper, into an commodity index fund traded according to an algorithmic formula. A mixed swap is designed to offset financial risks between the values of a financial instrument, e.g. foreign exchange currency contracts, and of commodity contracts, e.g. West Texas Intermediate crude oil.

Swaps are traded ?Over the Counter? (OTC), i.e. between two or more parties, not reported to regulatory authorities, and therefore are unregulated since the authorities have no data with which to regulate. In 2008, losses in OTC swaps nearly bankrupted major private financial institutions, triggering the Great Recession in which we still live. Only $29 trillion of Federal Reserve Bank emergency loans to U.S. and European banks and smaller, yet still huge, U.S. taxpayer-funded and/or guaranteed rescues saved the so-called Too Big To Fail banks from bankruptcy.

One of the major objectives of the ?Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act,? signed by President Barack Obama on July 20, 2010, is to regulate the U.S. swaps market and the swaps originating with U.S. bank-owned foreign affiliates. For example, the American International Group?s London affiliate originated swaps that would have bankrupted the company and triggered the bankruptcy of others without the $1 trillion plus Fed bailout and the at least $181 billion U.S. taxpayer funded rescue of AIG. Toward regulating overseas swaps with a ?direct and significant effect? on the U.S. economy, the CFTC requested comments on its proposal for the ?cross-border application? of Dodd-Frank. IATP submitted comments on August 27.

Our comments focused on how the regulations can be applied to foreign affiliates of U.S. swaps dealers (SDs) and major swaps participants (MSPs) without violating the sovereignty of regulators in foreign jurisdictions. We also commented on criteria the CFTC should use to determine that foreign jurisdictions have ?comparable comprehensive oversight and regulation? to that of the United States, as required by Dodd-Frank for foreign affiliate access to U.S. markets.

On the vast sea of swaps trading, commodities trading is a tiny boat, but one that is vital to the bottom line of TBTF banks. Commodity swaps are about .06 percent of the initially contracted (?gross notional?) value all U.S. swaps, according to a recent report by the Office of the Comptroller of Currency. However, commodity trading accounted for about $2.3 billion of a total $19 billion in trading revenues, i.e. about 11 percent of all trading revenues, for the largest U.S. banks (i.e. ?bank holding companies?) in the first quarter of 2012. So commodities are important to the bottom line of the Too Big To Fail.

For the first quarter of 2012, the gross notional value of all U.S. originated swaps traded was about $139 billion. The OCC figures don?t break out agricultural swaps from all commodity swaps. However, Dodd-Frank requires the reporting to the CFTC of both regulated exchange-traded and as yet unregulated OTC commodity index fund data. The June 2012 report of index data shows that about $170 billion of the total $284 billion gross notional value of all reported commodity contracts derive from agricultural commodity contracts, both the regulated futures contracts and the unregulated swaps contracts. So in the yet to be disaggregated sea of financial data, agricultural swaps contracts are looming large in value and in their influence on agricultural commodity prices.

Although the five-member Commission voted unanimously to release the proposed guidance for comment, Commissioners Jill Sommers and Scott O?Malia wrote concurrences that left little doubt about the ?cross-border application? they envisioned. Commissioner Sommers, the former chief lobbyist for the International Swaps and Derivatives Association, a fervent Dodd-Frank critic, characterized the CFTC guidance as ?inter-galactic? and ?extra-constitutional? in its scope. She stated her preference for a Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) about ?high-level principles,? between the CFTC and foreign regulators. For her, CFTC ?overreach? would be a negotiation about which substantive rules in foreign jurisdictions the CFTC would determine to comply with the Dodd Frank requirement of ?comparable comprehensive oversight and regulation? (Section 738).

IATP disagreed with Commissioner Sommers? accusation of CFTC jurisdictional overreach. The guidance draws a bright line as to where Dodd-Frank does not apply: swaps between non-U.S. swaps dealers and their major foreign clients that do not involve a U.S. parent company guaranteeing payment of foreign swaps losses and that therefore would not have a ?direct and significant effect? on the U.S. economy. Bush administration MRAs had failed to protect the U.S. economy from the huge foreign affiliate swaps losses that triggered the AIG, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Citigroup, Bank of America etc. bailouts by U.S. public funds. ?High-level principles? governing the British swaps market failed to prevent the swap dealer defaults that cascaded into U.S. markets.

Commissioner O?Malia?s dissents against CFTC rules have been cited as evidence in lawsuits against the CFTC, so it is not inconceivable that his concurrence likewise will be cited in a Wall Street lawsuit to prevent or delay the cross-border application of Dodd-Frank. His concurrence includes questions that anticipate a time when the CFTC will ?de-register? swaps dealers, thus releasing them from having to fulfill Dodd-Frank related rules. IATP responded that because U.S. commodity and financial markets had been deregulated at least since the ?Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000,? we anticipate that it will take at least a dozen years for a culture of regulatory compliance to replace the reigning culture of regulatory evasion.

For foreign jurisdictions with only ?high-level principles,? and not rules and adequate regulatory infrastructure governing the swaps markets, developing a culture of regulatory compliance might well take longer than a dozen years. U.S. lobbyists have advised their Asian clients to avoid contracting swaps that would make them subject to Dodd-Frank requirements. Canadian investment banks have asked their government to challenge parts of Dodd-Frank as a violation of the U.S. commitments to the World Trade Organization?s General Agreement on Trade in Services and Understanding on Financial Services.

Both swaps and regulated exchange contracts are bought and sold according to the mathematical formulas of High Frequency Trading. The explosion since 2009 in the High Frequency Trading of agricultural contracts, with some of the ?trades? lasting only seconds, will exacerbate price volatility and the higher agricultural prices that the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Develop anticipate for at least the next ten years. Financial speculator induced price volatility will make it yet more difficult for net food import dependent developing countries to manage the price risks of their agricultural imports. Swap dealers are seeking to open up affiliate offices in food insecure India.

FAO has tried to investigate the effect of international price volatility on food security in developing countries. However, as long as swaps dealers and their foreign affiliates are able to prevent the transparent reporting of a critical mass of swaps data, thus leaving those swaps unregulated, swaps dealers and their major clients will continue to profit from price volatility in agricultural and other swaps. It is critical that the cross-border application of Dodd-Frank effectively regulate the trading of global swaps dealers and their clients. The cost to global food security of unregulated swaps, and the price volatility they induce, will be literally incalculable.

On the Wings of Books: Home Improvements (What I Did Last ...

Last weekend my brother came for a short visit and since he is boring doesn?t like to sight see at all (he?s been to VA many times) we tackled a couple of home improvement projects.

Our first project was painting the shutters and the trim. I picked out a color at the store that I thought was similar, but it turns out it was much more blue than the original color. Which turned out good because I like this color better anyway.

photo 2

Then we tackled the railing on the front porch. Before I moved in I had noticed that on the one side some of the railing wasn?t connected, and has part of the home agreement the previous owners had to fix that. What I didn?t realize at the time was that what they had done (before they put the house on the marked) was paint over all the mold on the railing, so that it looked nice.

image

This is the first picture I took of my house. I know it?s a far away picture, but everything looks normal here. Over time I began to notice that the railing was getting worse and worse. Painting doesn?t stop mold, it just covers it up. I don?t really have the knowledge (or strength) to do much about it, so I?ve just kind of left it. After discussing it with my brother we decided to just take it down, it?s only 3 steps so it doesn?t really need a railing anyway. All it took was one kick from my brother and the entire left side of the railing came down. That?s how rotted it was.

photo 4

Here is the final look. The blue really brightens up the outside and no more rotted railing!

Google Stoops to a New Low! | Internet Marketing Secrets, Affiliate ...

Google Stoops to a New Low!

I must say when I saw what I?m about to show you in this post I had to check it twice as I didn?t quite believe what I was seeing at first, but sure enough Google has stooped to a new low today in their never quenching thirst for more profit. I can?t confirm that this has been rolled out across the world, but it is happening where I live in New Zealand anyway.

Before I show you this I first want to lay down a little background. We all know that Google makes their money when people click their ads listed on a Google results pages and on other websites that are opting into the Adsense program. So obviously Google?s agenda is to get as many of these ads clicked as possible.

However stop for just a moment and remember what Google is useful for and why it has become such a popular tool for people to use in the first place. Google is a search engine, not a giant advertising billboard, let?s get that straight to start with. People use Google as a gateway to the internet, and Google is supposed to be showing a list of the most relevant websites related to a user?s search queries.

This all sounds well and good, what a great service, Google makes it easy for us to find websites right?well sort of, but over the years Google has taken advantage of their popularity and slowly but surely are moving towards being one giant advertising billboard and that?s it!!

What Happened to the Organic Listing?

Yes the organic listings, the websites that Google lists that DO NOT pay Google to be there. The ones that do SEO (search engine optimization) and get ranked on the front page of Google, what did happen to them? The way Google is going you might have to scroll to page 3 to find an organic listing soon.

Let?s take a look at a typical Google results page below that I see when I search in Google, so you can see where I?m going with this. This might not be the same for you, as possible Google is testing this out in some countries, New Zealand where I live being the perfect test place.

So you can see from that image that above the fold of the page now 95% of the real estate is taken up by NON ORGANIC listings. Google has now added an extra listing for ?Searches related to KEYWORD? just below where the Google Ads finish, thus pushing the organic results even further down the page.

When people click on these related results, it will load a new Google page which will of course show more Google Ads, and give Google another chance to get them clicked. This is just another aggressive trick from Google to stop people from visiting websites that are not Ads.

This is not the first time they have done dirty tricks like this, in fact Google is slowly but surely doing more and more of these cunning techniques. Don?t believe me? Well think back to 12 months ago when the background color of ALL ADS where a pink color that was obvious, so searches new if they were clicking on an ad. Well Google went from obvious pink to a light pink that was hard to distinguish without tilting your screen, to now being WHITE so you can?t tell at all!

But there?s more, Google use to make it very obvious what listings were ads by telling you, as they were say ?Ads by Google?, but I guess that was being too helpful so now they just have the words ?Ads? and I wouldn?t be surprized if they remove even that soon.

What amazes me is that the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) comes down on affiliate sites who don?t make it obvious that they make a commission from links on their sites, but they let Google continue down this aggressive and somewhat deceptive path of advertising.

Do Know Evil?.As Google Do Plenty For Us All

I get sick and tired of listening to garbage from Matt Cutts at Google telling us all to be transparent and put up QUALITY sites for the user experience when I see Google turn around and pull moves like this latest stunt.

One of Google Panda?s penalties was for sites that have too much advertising above the fold!!!!!! Can you see the irony in this, when a Google results page is essentially nothing more than one giant ad, as they push the organic results below the fold.

Google?s motto is ?do no evil? yeah right, you have to be kidding me, Google is shown quite clearly that they have no interest in helping people find the best website that meets their search query and instead want to show you the results that make them the most money.

Summary

I hope this latest move by Google annoys you as much as it has me. I would love to hear from you all below in the comments. However like I said Google might not have rolled this out globally yet, so you might not see it when you use Google, but I can assure you that it is there when I use Google, so something is going on.

WHY IT MATTERS: Debt

The issue:

A sea of red ink is confronting the nation and presidents to come.

The budget deficit ? the shortfall created when the government spends more in a given year than it collects in taxes and fees? topped $1 trillion for the fourth straight time in the budget year that just ended Sept. 30. When there's not enough to pay current bills, the government borrows, mostly by selling interest-bearing Treasury bonds, bills and notes to investors and governments worldwide. It now borrows roughly 31 cents for every dollar it spends.

The national debt refers to the total amount the federal government owes; the deficit is just a one-year slice.

The U.S. has been borrowing since the 1700s, when it needed money to finance the American Revolution. The outstanding debt has since risen to a shade over $16 trillion. While there's plenty of finger-pointing by politicians over who's to blame, deficits historically surge during wars and deep recessions, and the U.S. has had both in the past decade.

___

Where they stand:

President Barack Obama has proposed bringing deficits down by slowing spending gradually, to avoid suddenly tipping the economy back into recession. To help, he would raise taxes on households earning more than $250,000 annually and impose a surcharge of 30 percent on those making more than $1 million.

He acknowledges that his spending on recession-fighting stimulus, tax relief and bailout programs ? much of it started under President George W. Bush ? has contributed to the deficit. But so have bipartisan agreements to extend Bush-era tax cuts, and paying for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Also raising deficits: a drop in tax revenues as more people found themselves out of work and personal and corporate incomes that sagged in the deepest downturn since the Great Depression.

Republican candidate Mitt Romney would lower deficits mostly through deep spending cuts, including some of the reductions proposed by his conservative running mate Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, chairman of the House Budget Committee. But many of the cuts they're pushing would be partially negated by their proposals to lower top tax rates on both corporations and individuals.

___

Why it matters:

Deficits and debt are important because it's never good to spend more than you make for too long. The party out of power always makes deficits a big issue against the one holding the White House ? as Democrats did in 2008 and Republicans are doing now.

Leaders of both parties agree the burden will become unsustainable if borrowing is not reined in while interest obligations keep rising. But huge policy differences exist over how to balance the budget or at least trim deficits to manageable levels ? whether through spending cuts, tax increases or a mix.

Obama and Democrats tend to favor a combination, while Republicans mostly want just spending cuts, although Romney and Ryan say they'd also end some tax deductions and close loopholes ? without specifying which ones.

Congress sets a ceiling on how much the government can borrow. If this debt limit is breached, the government will default on its obligations. This has never happened, but it almost did last summer in a Capitol Hill standoff. As a consequence, the nation's credit rating was downgraded for the first time ever.

The current $16.4 trillion debt limit will be reached late this year or early next. A slew of tax breaks will expire at the same time.

No matter who wins, he'll immediately have his hands full.

The legislative task force looking into whether or not to set up a state health exchange and how to deal with Medicaid in Idaho met on Monday and the most intriguing presentation came concerning the state setting up a nonprofit state-based insurance exchange.

The Idaho Legislature?s Health Care Task Force is a joint Senate-House committee composed of 14 senators and representatives. What it heard Monday afternoon in one presentation was a clear difference of opinion on what constitutes a nonprofit exchange.

The presentation was given by Jack Rovner, a founder of The Health Law Consultancy in Chicago. Rovner?s firm also represents health insurance companies, including in Idaho.

Rovner said that Obamacare allows for establishing either a government agency or a nonprofit established by the state. He said setting up a nonprofit exchange is a private market solution. ?The option will preserve, for the state of Idaho, control over the health insurance exchange even with key aspects such as government structure, its operation and how it pays to operate itself, its finances.?

The nonprofit would need to be set up either through legislative action or executive action, Rovner said, including the state would have to execute some oversight over the nonprofit.

But Sen. Steve Vick, R-Dalton Gardens, questioned Rovner?s assertions about setting up the nonprofit corporation for the health exchange and if a nonprofit is truly a private option. ?There?s no competition. And, we (state) appoint all of the board members and all of the things mentioned here. It doesn?t really seem like a private market solution. It just seems like a different way to have the government do it.?

Rovner said the nonprofit would be set up by the state and that the state would determine how it operates, but that it would not be a government agency.

There are a few minimum requirements in order to set up the nonprofit, according to testimony heard by the committee. First, the board for the nonprofit must be made up of a majority of those with experience in health care delivery. That means members of the board should be made up of health insurers, agents, brokers and hospitals.

?Logically, we would want an informed board of people who have knowledge of what the health care delivery system is so that the nonprofit entity can be successful in delivering the kinds of products and services? desired, said Rovner.

However, the majority of the board, he explained, cannot be controlled by the health insurance industry or anyone who makes their living by selling health insurance, such as agents or brokers.

Still, Vick was skeptical of Rovner?s definition of nonprofit and it being a private solution.? ?If there?s no competition, then it?s really a quasi-government operation anyway. It just seems like we give up some control without gaining much.?

The legislative task force and two committees appointed by Gov. Butch Otter?one to look into health care exchanges and another to consider what to do with Medicaid in Idaho?are scheduled to report their findings and recommendations to the governor in November and as the state?s lawmakers consider how to deal with Obamacare.

(AP) ? Former Venezuelan Vice President Elias Jaua said Sunday that he met with aging revolutionary icon Fidel Castro for five hours and showed The Associated Press photos of the encounter, quashing persistent rumors that the former Cuban leader was on his deathbed or had suffered a massive stroke.

Jaua also confirmed that the 86-year-old retired Cuban president personally accompanied him to the Hotel Nacional after their meeting Saturday, in which they talked about politics, history, culture and tourism.

"He had the courtesy of bringing me to the hotel," Jaua said Sunday, adding that Castro looked "very well."

Jaua showed a photograph of himself seated in a minibus along with the former Cuban leader, Castro's wife, Dalia Soto del Valle, a hotel executive and several other people. The photo shows Jaua and Castro smiling broadly, and the former Cuban leader is wearing a checked shirt and cowboy hat.

The public appearance was Castro's first in months. A top Hotel Nacional executive told the AP earlier Sunday how Castro had dropped off the Venezuelan guest, then stayed on to chat with hotel staff.

"Fidel Castro was here yesterday, he brought a guest and spoke to workers and hotel leaders for 30 minutes," commercial director Yamila Fuster said. Fuster was not present, but hotel director Antonio Martinez is seated next to Castro in the photo shown by Jaua, and told Cuban media later that the bearded revolutionary's health was great.

"Fidel is excellent and his health is magnificent," Martinez said in comments carried on the evening news, which also broadcast images of Jaua showing off his photograph with Fidel. "With his cowboy hat, his smile, his ideas, (he was) very coherent and affectionate with the workers."

The news presenter also announced that Castro would publish an article on Monday, but did not say what it would be about.

State-run Trabajadores newspaper reported that an election worker collected an absentee ballot from Castro at his home and took it to the polls for him, a right it said was extended to all citziens with "impediments." On Sunday, Cubans were voting in municipal elections which the island's leaders hold up as evidence the government is representative. Critics say the process is a sham because there is no campaigning and only the Communist Party is recognized.

Castro's health has been the subject of intense speculation for years, but the rumors gained force in recent days after he failed to publicly congratulate Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a top ally, on his Oct. 7 electoral victory. The former Cuban leader has not appeared since March, when he was shown greeting visiting Pope Benedict XVI, and he has also ceased writing his once-constant opinion pieces, the last of which appeared in June.

Twitter and other social media sites have been abuzz with claims of Castro's demise. Late last week, a Venezuelan doctor purported to have information that Castro had suffered a stroke, but the same doctor has previously claimed knowledge that turned out to be false.

Sunday's news from the Hotel Nacional appeared to be Cuba's attempt to hit back against what it says are false and malicious rumors. A letter attributed to Castro was published Thursday by Cuban state media. In it, he congratulated graduates of a medical school on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

Two close family members of Castro have also recently denied he is in grave condition. Juanita Castro, the former leader's sister, told the AP in Miami that reports of her brother's condition are "pure rumors" and "absurd."

Son Alex Castro told a reporter for a weekly Cuban newspaper that his father "is well, going about his daily life."

Castro stepped down in 2006 following a severe illness, handing power to his brother Raul.

Roads closed around Lebanon in protest of bombing

BEIRUT (AP) ? Lebanese security officials say angry protesters have closed roads around the country to protest the bombing that killed a top security official and seven other people.

Lebanon's government declared a national day of mourning Saturday for the victims that included Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, head of the intelligence division of Lebanon's domestic security forces.

Friday's explosion in Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood wounded dozens.

The officials say protesters in mostly Sunni Muslim areas closed roads Saturday in Beirut, the southern city of Sidon, the northern city of Tripoli and several towns in the eastern Bekaa Valley.

The highway linking central Beirut with the city's international airport was closed, as well as the highway that links the capital with Syria, the officials said on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Deadly Spain earthquake triggered by groundwater removal

Groundwater removal triggered the unusually shallow and deadly earthquake that hit Lorca, Spain, in 2011, according to a new study.

Scientists have known for decades that pumping water into the Earth can set off small earthquakes. But this is the first time that removing water has been identified as an earthquake trigger, researchers said. Both the size and the location of the quake were influenced by groundwater pumping, the study found.

"The fact that the very tiny stress changes due to normal processes, such as the extraction of groundwater, could have an effect on very large systems such as faults, that's very surprising," said Pablo Gonz?lez, lead study author and a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.

The researchers were also able to precisely calculate the physical changes that generated the quake. The results will help seismologists better understand the physics that control when an earthquake starts and stops ? an important step in predicting when and where a quake will occur, and its size.

"We need observations of this sort to calibrate physical models" of faults, said Jean-Philippe Avouac, a geologist at Caltech in Pasadena, Calif., who was not involved in the study. "The initiation and arrest of [fault] ruptures are something we are trying to constrain," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

Small quake, devastating effect

The May 5, 2011, earthquake was a relatively moderate magnitude 5.1. Quakes of this size usually don't cause significant damage in developed countries. A 2006 earthquake of magnitude 4.8 near Lorca did not cause any deaths. [Video: What Does Earthquake 'Magnitude' Mean?]

But the 2011 quake ruptured only 0.6 miles (1 kilometer) below the Earth's surface, which meant the earthquake's energy was concentrated at the surface. Nine people were killed and dozens were injured, and both unreinforced masonry, like medieval churches, and modern buildings were damaged.

Thanks to previous research work in Spain, Gonz?lez suspected the quake's shallow epicenter could be related to groundwater extraction near Lorca. The groundwater table south of Lorca has dropped as much as 820 feet (250 meters) since 1960.

"When the tragic event occurred, we asked ourselves if the earthquake might be related to the subsidence. The earthquake was very shallow, and moreover, this pattern of subsidence was bounded by the fault," Gonz?lez told OurAmazingPlanet.

Linking subsidence to fault rupture

Using data from satellite imagery and GPS stations, Gonz?lez and his colleagues first confirmed the quake occurred on the Alhama de Murcia fault. Then, they calculated how the crust responded to removing the weight of the water. Releasing the load increased the stress on the Alhama de Murcia fault by a few tens of kilopascals ? less than atmospheric pressure ? the study found.

During the quake, the fault broke only in areas where removing groundwater increased stress on the fault. From this correlation, Gonz?lez inferred that the groundwater removal not only helped trigger the quake, but also controlled the size of the fault rupture and the earthquake's magnitude.

However, the amount of energy released by the quake far exceeded that built up by groundwater extraction. Thus, the earthquake released both stress caused by groundwater extraction and several centuries of regional deformation, the study concludes. Southeastern Spain is near the plate boundary region that separates the Eurasia and Africa tectonic plates.

The findings were detailed in the Oct. 21 issue of the journal Nature Geosciences.

At Stapleton Sports Ski Shop We Carry The Latest In Race, Front ...

You never know what type of conditions your going to get when you plan a ski vacation, of course we all pray for powder but your there to have a good time regardless. Besides conditions your mood may change from day to day, after all all types of skiing are fun.

You may want to carve hi speed arcing turns down Aztec on Aspen Mountain or on Thunderbowl on Aspen Highlands. Aztec is part of the World Cup circuit you know. If so we have a great selection of front-side carving skis to choose from in our ski rental fleet. Maybe your in the mood for some bump skiing, it is what Aspen is famous for after all, well we have bump skis too! Lets say your heading out to Snowmass Mountain for the day, well with all the variety of terrain Snowmass has to offer you are going to want to rent an All-Mountain ski for the day. Start with some hi speed runs down Big Burn to warm up then head into the steeps on The Wall for some extreme skiing. Then it finally dumps, well you are going to want to grab some powder boards and head up to Highlands Bowl, some of the best terrain in the country and the hike keeps the fluffy stuff untracked.

Maybe youre the adventurous type, well we have skis in our shop for you too. Aspen is legendary for its side country terrain, take the lift up and head out the gates for some laps on Little Annies or other remarkable backcountry terrain. If you are not an experienced backcountry traveler with avalanche education Stapleton recommends hiring a local guide service to show you around and check conditions. Even if you are experienced you will get more runs in and be safer doing it!

It could be time for you to try a Rockered ski too. What is Rocker? There are three main types of ski / snowboard profile: camber, rocker, and flat. Many modern shapes use a combination of more than one of these. Rocker (also called reverse-camber) is just as it sounds camber turned upside down. All skis and snowboards, rockered or cambered, when put on edge and weighted in a turn achieve reverse-camber. Rocker skis and snowboards offer superior float in the soft snow and increased ease of turn initiation with less chance of "catching" an edge. As skis in general get wider, rocker helps keep the new shapes maneuverable for a wider range of skiers.

Bottom line we know there is a lot of ways to get down the hill and we have the ski for you!

Quick Tips For Those Investing In Commercial Real Estate | Eric - First

Working with commercial property buying is not as difficult as you may think. However, there are things people should know before they consider purchasing a property. This article teaches you helpful advice so that you can make the most out of your experience.

Before purchasing any property, you should investigate its area to determine the average income level, unemployment rate and whether or not that area is growing. Properties centrally located near universities and hospitals will have a consistently higher value, and it will sell more quickly.

Be sure to see and enter into good deals. Professional commercial real estate investors can tell when a deal is worth investing in without putting too much thought into it. The secret to a good deal for experienced investors is to have a way out, meaning if they do not like the deal, they will walk away. They have the experience to show them when repairs are necessary, how to correctly calculate their risk and which types of properties will help them to meet their financial goals.

TIP! If you plan to finance your commercial investments, you must first ensure that you are backed by a competent legal adviser. Make sure you keep your name clear of all threats if you happen to have anything go sour with any real estate endeavors you have set forth for yourself.

Prior to searching for a real estate property to invest in, figure out exactly what you would want in an ideal commercial property. Write down the things you like about the property, important features are office numbers, how many conference rooms, restrooms, and how big it is.

Be sure to negotiate on the fact of what you are, the seller or buyer. It is important that your concerns and opinions are heard and recognized by the other parties; you must always put forth the effort to ensure fair pricing for the commercial property.

Closely check the surrounding environment of your property. You are required to clean up any environmental waste on your property. Are you considering a property that is located in a flood zone? You might want to reevaluate your decision. You can contact environmental assessment agencies to obtain information about the area in which you are considering buying something.

TIP! Find out how to spot and jump on good deals. Real estate experts are able to know a solid investment immediately.

When dealing with commercial properties location is everything. You will want to focus on the actual neighborhood for starters. Compare the growth of the property?s neighborhood to similar neighborhoods around the country. You?re not only thinking about the here and now; you want to look a decade down the line too. Pick an area with the potential for sustainable growth.

Educate yourself on the meaning of net operating income (NOI), a term associated with commercial real estate used for investment purposes. For the investment to be profitable, it has to produce more income than operating expenses.

TIP! Don?t become greedy and over-inflate your real estate asking price. There are a lot of factors that determine the value of the lot.

If you are hunting among multiple properties, make a checklist for touring sites. Certainly take down initial proposal responses, but don?t get into anything further without informing the property owners. Don?t hesitate to tell a property owner that you?re considering other properties as well. Most property owners won?t be upset or angry; they expect you to be looking at more than one property. It might lead to a better deal.

Keep the smaller issuer for later on in your negotiations and the larger ones first, when you write a letter of intent. This will make negotiations less tense and make gaining agreement on the smaller issues easier to complete.

You may wish to focus your efforts on only one property type at a time. Concentrate on one particular type of commercial real estate at any given time, whether it be office blocks or retail space, for example. Each type requires and deserves all of your undivided attention. You are better served by mastering one investment than floundering with many.

TIP! If you are new to commercial real estate investing, you should investigate any tax benefits that you could be eligible for. In addition to depreciation benefits, many investors enjoy tax deductions for interest expenses.

Have family, friends, and professional lenders partner with you to make sure you have enough cash to buy commercial real estate. Find an agreement in advance: you could give the lender a percentage of what you make or repay lenders with fixed interest rates.

When you are hunting for a permanent home for your growing business, keep in mind that size matters. Since you do not want to have to purchase a different property anytime soon, it is important to invest in something that allows your business space to get bigger.

If you are financing your commercial properties, you need to ensure that you have the proper financial statements for both yourself and your business. Without them, lenders can?t know how well you manage your finances, making it less likely that you will get the funds you need.

TIP! Go as big as you can when you?re looking at a commercial real estate investment. If you were thinking of buying a building with five units, realize that it is no harder managing 50 units than five.

If you are considering purchasing an apartment complex, be aware that smaller complexes can be more problematic than larger ones. In fact, veterans in the field typically advise avoiding any complex with fewer than 10 units. However, each case has different issues, and the information that you have about a specific property will guide your decision.

As stated earlier, you will need to prepare yourself extensively before pursuing commercial real estate. Fortunately, this article has already given you a wealth of good investing

Nearby Earth-Sized Alien Planet Could Spur Interstellar Exploration

The recent discovery of an Earth-size alien planet right next door to us could help spark humanity's first true steps beyond our own solar system, scientists say.

On Tuesday (Oct. 16), a European team announced the existence of Alpha Centauri Bb, a roasting-hot world residing in the nearest star system to our own, just 4.3 light-years away. The find could spur serious and sustained efforts to explore the newfound planet and any siblings it may have in the three-star Alpha Centauri system, say researchers not involved in the discovery.

"This is a huge motivator for the future of sending probes outside of our planetary system and humans trying to figure out how to travel to another star system," MIT planetary scientist Sara Seager told SPACE.com via email. "I think the reality of a planet and the promise of more is a game changer."

An exciting find

The astronomers found Alpha Centauri Bb, which is about 13 percent more massive than Earth, using the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher, an instrument on a telescope at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory in Chile. [Gallery: Nearby Alien Planet Alpha Centauri Bb]

The news came as a surprise to some in the exoplanet community.

"It reads like Poe?s short story 'The Purloined Letter' where Nature has hidden one of the most sought-after jewels in the field of exoplanet science in plain sight," said Jon Jenkins of NASA's Ames Research Center and the SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute.

"It?s quite a cosmic joke to think that we?ve been spending decades planning missions and observations to find Earth-mass planets orbiting much more distant stars and Nature hides an Easter egg just beside us," added Jenkins, who is analysis lead for NASA's prolific planet-hunting Kepler Space Telescope.

The planet orbits extremely close to its host star Alpha Centauri B, completing one lap every 3.2 days. As a result, its surface is far too hot to support life as we know it.

But recent exoplanet detections, including many by Kepler, show that small, rocky worlds like Alpha Centauri Bb tend to be found in multiplanet systems.

"So, this would imply the chances are high that this star has other planets farther out, and perhaps one might be in the habitable zone," said David Charbonneau of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, referring to that just-right range of distances around a star that can support the existence of liquid water.

Future space telescopes ? such as NASA's proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder and the European Space Agency's Darwin instrument ? could search for signs of life on promising worlds that may neighbor Alpha Centauri Bb, said veteran planet hunter Geoff Marcy of the University of California, Berkeley.

"Those missions can not only image planets in the habitable zone but take spectra of them, to assess the chemical composition of the atmosphere of the planet," Marcy told SPACE.com via email. "There is a prospect, with planets around Alpha Cen B, to search for bio-signatures in the atmosphere of any planets in the habitable zone."

Interstellar exploring

That would be exciting enough. But Marcy and some of his colleagues hold out hope that humanity will get a much closer look at the Alpha Centauri system someday ? and they think now is a good time to get the ball rolling.

"There is now great impetus to send a probe with a camera to Alpha Cen to study the three stars there (including Proxima Centauri) and to study the planets and moons there," Marcy said. "What a rich opportunity for NASA and ESA, working with all nations on Earth, to send a probe to Alpha Centauri, galvanizing interest from people of all ages around the world."

Such a mission is not practical with today's spacecraft, which would take tens of thousands of years to travel the 25 trillion miles (40 trillion kilometers) to Alpha Centauri. So researchers will have to come up with new, superfast propulsion systems ? perhaps nuclear rockets, antimatter fusion drives or another such advanced technology in the early stages of development today.

Marcy thinks the world should aim to launch a robotic spacecraft toward Alpha Centauri by the year 2100.

"The president of the United States, after his election in November, should lead a vigorous new NASA program," he said. "We should study the prospective propulsion methods that can launch a probe to Alpha Cen before the century is out, returning data back safely to Earth."

The time may be right to start laying the groundwork for such an ambitious mission. The world is buzzing about Alpha Centauri Bb, a planet found in a star system familiar to many people from countless sci-fi novels, TV shows and films.

"Knowing that these distant horizons exist will inspire generations of explorers," said Natalie Batalha, deputy leader of the Kepler science team at NASA Ames.

"Why climb the mountain? Because it exists," she told SPACE.com. "That's the human spirit, and it brings with it infinite possibilities ? for practical things like technology that improves the human condition and the reality of interstellar exploration but also for lofty things like evolution and global cooperation and who knows ? maybe even knowledge of other life in the universe.?One can dream." ?
