Sherman's Food Adventures: 900 West Lounge (Afternoon Tea)

Funny how something old becomes new again. Take bell-bottom jeans. One would think they disappeared with the 8-track in the late 70's and early 80's. Nope, I have a pair of bell-bottom jeans that I wear regularly. The same could be said about cars, in particular, the Beatle and more recently, the Fiat 500. How about the Salisbury Steak? Uh... Yah, that hasn't come back in full force yet... Another phenomenon is High-Tea (or afternoon tea) and no, I don't do it that often. Despite its rebirth, especially with the younger folk, it has suddenly become trendy to drink tea with little sweet and savoury treats. As mentioned, it is not my cup of tea (sorry for the pun), but there have been times I've been sucked into going. Miss Y coerced me into joining her at Applewood and once again, I promised to meet her at the Hotel Vancouver for some raised pinky tea sipping.

If it weren't uncomfortable enough for myself doing afternoon tea, imagine Miss Y being an hour late. That's right. I garnered the sympathy of practically all the staff when they noticed I was sitting there all alone for an hour with my tea (which was getting cold...). Better yet, she told me to order first which meant me+tea+food = creepy guy all alone taking pictures of a smoked salmon pinwheel.... I'm not sure if it was Miss Y's intention of making me squirm. With her finally present, we got down to the food.? We started with the bottom tier first which consisted of a Smoked Salmon Pinwheel, Cucumber Sandwich, Ham & Cheese Croissant and a Mango Curry Chicken Canape. Nothing was bad per se, but nothing really stood out either.? The Mango Chicken Curry was quite mild and there really wasn't any mango flavour.

Onto desserts, it included fresh-made Scones, Black Current Mousse in a chocolate cup, Opera Cake and Lemon Tarts.? Again, nothing really out-of-the-ordinary. I did enjoy the lemon tart (as I always do) since the curd was tangy and smooth.? The tart shell was buttery and a bit soft though.? The scones were fresh and the Devonshire cream was nice.? But there was something missing about the whole thing.? Maybe I expect more out of the Hotel Vancouver.? It is *the* place where most would think to get the best high-tea.? It almost seemed like they mailed it in rather than stepping it up a notch.

The Good:
- Attentive service (especially for me all alone)
- There is a certain level of elegance

The Bad:
- Food a bit ordinary?
- Expensive

Quick tips to improve self confidence - Chartered Accountants India ...

?

Here are some quick tips to improve your Self Confidence.? If we are committed to have a healthy self confidence there are many things you can do every day to boost your self confidence, each small steps that will help you to reach your goal. The good news is that self-esteem is not fixed and can be improved, try some of the steps below to boost your confidence and self-esteem.

?

1)?Identify your successes.?Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you excel, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to take pride in them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority is a state of mind in which you've declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.

?

2)?Look in the mirror and smile. Studies surrounding what's called the "facial feedback theory" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to register certain emotions. So by looking in the mirror and smiling every day, you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.

?

3)?Exercise and eat healthy. Exercise raises adrenaline and makes one feel happier and healthier. It is certainly an easy and effective way to boost your self-confidence.

4)?Turn feelings of envy or jealousy into a desire to achieve. Stop wanting what others have just because they have it; seek things simply because you want them, whether anybody else has them or not.

{mosgoogle left}5) When you're feeling superbly insecure, write down a list of things that are good about you. Then read the list back. You'd be surprised at what you can come up with.

6) Don't be afraid to?push yourself a bit?- a little bit of pressure can actually show just how good you are!

7) You can try taking a martial arts or fitness class/course (or both). This will help build confidence and strength.

8) Invest in some new clothing and donate some of your old clothing to send a message to yourself that you both look sharp and feel sharp.

9) Try to make yourself?talk positively?at all times. When you hear yourself saying you can't do something, stop and say you can. Unless you try, you will never know whether you are able to or not.

10) Don't get wrapped up in your mistakes and dwell on bad points; they can contrast your good points or even give you something to improve. There's no feeling like being good at something you were really bad at.

11) Don't confuse what you have with who you are. People degrade their self worth when comparing possessions.

12)?Surround yourself with nurturing friends, not overly critical individuals who make you feel inadequate or insecure. This could do great harm and damage to your self confidence.

Romney strategist lauds white, wealthy, middle-class support

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The ageing New York Yankees, struggling to inject youth into their roster, appear poised to sign two of their evergreen core members for one more go-round in a drive for a sixth World Series ring since 1996. Left-handed starting pitcher Andy Pettitte, 40, and all-time Major League Baseball saves leader Mariano Rivera, who turns 43 on Thursday, are reportedly on the verge of signing deals for one last campaign. Those pitchers could well be effective in 2013. Pettitte returned from a one-year retirement last season to go 5-4 with an impressive 2. ...

Experts: Melting permafrost being ignored at climate talks

Dec. 30, 2011: For thousands of years, permafrost has trapped Siberia's carbon-rich soil, a compost of Ice Age plant and animal remains. But global warming is melting the permafrost and exposing the soil, causing highly flammable methane to seep out. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

All the back and forth over climate change negotiations hasn't dealt with a looming problem: melting permafrost could account for more than a third of all warming emissions by 2100, experts warned Tuesday, and yet nations haven't factored it into reduction targets.

"Permafrost is one of the keys to the planet?s future because it contains large stores of frozen organic matter that, if thawed and released into the atmosphere, would amplify current global warming," U.N. Environment Program Director Achim Steiner said in announcing the report by top permafrost scientists.

"Continuing to ignore the challenges of warming permafrost" is not an option, he added.

The report was released as nations gather in Doha, Qatar, this week for the latest round of climate treaty talks that aim to limit warming by the year 2100 to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial temperatures.

"Permafrost has begun to thaw," lead author Kevin Schaefer, a researcher at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado-Boulder, told a news conference in Doha.

"Permafrost emissions could ultimately account for up to 39 percent of total (greenhouse gas) emissions," he warned.?"This must be factored into treaty negotiations ...?or we risk overshooting the 2 degrees Celsius maximum warming target."

Permafrost, defined as ground that stays frozen for at least two years in a row, stores vast quantities of carbon dioxide and methane, both gases that contribute to the greenhouse effect warming the Earth.

United Nations Environment Program

This map shows one scenario of permafrost melt using climate models. The scenario shows a nearly 59 percent loss in near-surface permafrost by 2100.

Widespread thaw would create a vicious circle, since the release of more CO2 and methane would trap more heat in the air and in turn accelerate the melting. That, in turn,?could bring an irreversible, runaway effect.?

The experts predicted an irreversible loss of between 30 and 85 percent of permafrost near the surface. That was based on a forecast of Arctic temperatures rising by 6 degrees C (10.8 F) through 2100.

The permafrost report follows reports by the World Bank and the U.N. Environment Program warning?that rising world greenhouse gas emissions, even without permafrost contributions, were on track to push up temperatures well beyond 2 degrees C by 2100.?

At Doha, nations are negotiating around extending the Kyoto Protocol ? a legally-binding emissions cap that expires this year.?

Many rich countries such as Japan, Russia and Canada have refused to endorse an extension and want a completely new treaty. The United States was the lone industrialized country not to join the original pact in 1997 because it did not include other big emitters like China.?

The frozen ground that covers the top of the world has been thawing rapidly over the last three decades. But there is cause for concern beyond the far north, because the carbon released from thawing permafrost could raise global temeratures even higher. NBC's Anne Thompson reports for "Changing Planet," produced by NBC Learn in partnership with the National Science Foundation.

Japan insists it would be better to focus on a new treaty by 2015.

"Only developed countries are legally bound by the Kyoto Protocol and their emissions are only 26 percent," Masahiko Horie, speaking for the Japanese delegation, said in Doha. "If we continue the same, only one quarter of the world is legally bound and three quarters of countries are not bound at all."

Related story: Rich-poor split persists at climate talks

But developing countries like Brazil are warning that it will be difficult for poor nations to do their part if they continue watching industrialized nations shy away from legally-binding pacts like Kyoto.?

Rovi is shutting down its OTA TV guide service without notice

Without notice, Rovi shuts down TV guide service

The company with so much love it changed its name to fool its fans is at it again, this time killing the signal that provides guide data directly to many televisions and set-top boxes. You see, before changing its name from Macrovision, Rovi acquired Gemstar-TV guide in 2008 -- which was probably most well known for the integrated program guide common in higher end TVs throughout the last decade. While most people just use the guide offered on their provider's set-top, this guide is for those who actually use the clear-QAM or over-the-air tuner in their TV. The way it worked is that manufacturers baked the software into the TV, which would then tune into a local affiliate's broadcast of a week's worth of guide data. The setup successfully made it through the digital transition -- minus the truckloads of analog-only TVs ceasing to work along the way -- as new TVs featured a digital version of the service, as well as some digital converters, like the DTVpal DVR.

PFT: Mystery man Harbaugh stays mum on QB

New York Jets v Seattle SeahawksGetty Images

Seattle Seahawks cornerbacks Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner continue to deny that they have ever taken performance-enhancing substances despite facing four-game suspensions for testing positive.

According to Mike Garafolo of the USA Today, Sherman is saying that he unknowingly ingested Adderall prescribed to a teammate according to a person familiar with Sherman?s explanation. Sherman?s agent, Kevin Poston, would not speak on the specifics of the case but when presented with the scenario described Poston said, ?What appears is not always the case. Hopefully, when the facts come out, justice will prevail.?

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network also reported the scenario described by Garafolo.

Sherman, however, is completely denying that?s what took place. In a series of texts Monday night, Sherman disputed the accounts being reported by the USA Today and NFL Network.

?It?s totally false,? Sherman said. ?It will be resolved in time and I have never taken anything.?

Sherman has denied ever taking Adderall since the suspensions were first reported on Sunday.

Browner?s agent, Peter Schaffer, also denied the claims against him client.

?I can tell you that Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system,? Schaffer said. ??He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. We?re exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system.?

Per Garafolo, Browner is already in the league?s substance-abuse program following an undisclosed incident while playing for the Denver Broncos in 2005. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com was on Sports Radio KJR in Seattle Monday morning and relayed Browner?s denial of taking any performance-enhancing substance knowing how frequently he is tested due to being in the substance-abuse program.

?[Browner]?s someone who?s tested regularly; up to three times a week,? La Canfora said. ?So he?s told people, ?look, I knew what I was up against. I don?t even drink a beer because I?m so wary of having a positive for anything.? So he?s been adamant that ?I?m not on anything. I?ve gone out of my way not to put any sort of substance, supplement, or anything other than what you would normally eat and drink.??

Schaffer said they received notice from the league about the positive tests last week. He said normally hearings for these matters are usually scheduled within 20 days of the notice being sent but circumstances could require it to take longer. Schaffer said he wasn?t sure how long it would take for this particular hearing to come about.

?It?s too early to tell what we?re going to need, what witnesses and evidence and experts are going to be required so there is no way to even guess at this point,? he said.

Until those appeals are resolved, both Browner and Sherman are eligible to play for the Seahawks. Head coach Pete Carroll said Monday that he fully expects to have them available for this Sunday?s game against the Chicago Bears.

Cyber Monday likely to be busiest online sales day

(AP) ? Black Friday is a distant memory. Small Business Saturday is long gone. Now, it's Cyber Monday's turn.

Cyber Monday, coined in 2005 by a shopping trade group that noticed a spike in online sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving when people returned to their work computers, is the next in a line of days that stores are counting on to jumpstart the holiday shopping season.

This year's Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest online shopping day of the year for the third year in a row: According to research firm comScore, Americans are expected to spend $1.5 billion, up from $1.25 billion last year on Cyber Monday, as retailers ramp up deals to get shoppers to click on their websites.

Amazon.com, which is starting its Cyber Monday deals at midnight on Monday, is offering as much as 60 percent off a Panasonic VIERA 55-inch TV that's usually priced higher than $1,000. Sears is offering $430 off a Maytag washer and dryer, each on sale for $399. And Kmart is offering 75 percent off diamond earrings and $60 off a 12-in-1 multigame table on sale for $89.99.

Retailers are hoping the deals will appeal to shoppers like Matt Sexton, 39, who for the first time plans to complete all his holiday shopping online this year on his iPad tablet computer. Sexton, who plans to spend up to $4,000 this season, already shopped online on the day after Thanksgiving known as Black Friday and found a laptop from Best Buy for $399, a $200 savings, among other deals.

"The descriptions and reviews are so much better online so you can compare and price shop and for the most part get free shipping," said Sexton, who lives in Queens, N.Y., and is a manager at a utility company.

Sexton also said it's easy to return an online purchase to a physical store than it had been in previous years. "That helps with gifts," he said.

How well retailers do on Cyber Monday will offer insight into Americans' evolving shopping habits. With the growth in high speed Internet access and the wide and increasing use of smartphones and tablet computers, people are relying less on their work computers to shop than they did when Shop.org, the digital division of trade group The National Retail Federation, coined the term "Cyber Monday."

As a result, the period between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday has have become busy for online shopping as well. Indeed, IBM Benchmark, which tracks online sales, said on Thanksgiving, a day that historically had not been big for online shopping, online sales this year rose 17.4 percent over 2011. Of that, mobile shopping, or shopping on smartphones and tablets, rose 18.3 percent. Meanwhile, online sales on Black Friday were up 20.7 percent.

For the overall holiday season, comScore predicts online sales will be up 17 percent to $43.4 billion. And the research firm expects online sales to surpass 10 percent of total retail spending this holiday season. The National Retail Federation estimates that overall retail sales in November and December will be up 4.1 percent this year to $586.1 billion

"People years ago didn't have the kind of connectivity to shop online at their homes. So when they went back to work after Thanksgiving they'd shop on the Monday after," said Vicki Cantrell, executive director of Shop.org. "Now they don't need the work computer to be able to do that."

But as other days become popular for online shopping, Cyber Monday may lose some of its cache. To be sure, Cyber Monday hasn't always been the biggest online shopping day. In fact, up until three years ago, that title was historically held on the last day shoppers can order items with standard shipping rates and get them delivered before Christmas. That day usually falls in late December.

Even though Cyber Monday is expected to be the biggest shopping day this year, industry watchers say it could just be a matter of time before other days take that ranking.

"Of all the benchmark spending days, Thanksgiving is growing at the fastest rate, up 128 percent over the last five years," said Andrew Lipsman, a spokesman with comScore.

Drug gang bust in Honduras nets $100M assets - World News

By Reuters

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras -- Anti-drug agents on Saturday broke up an alleged gang of synthetic drug producers and seized $100 million in assets, a Honduras government spokesman said.

Anti-drug trafficking agents carried out raids on 24 sites in the northern part of the country, seizing 700 heads of cattle and 150 vehicles in one of the biggest organized crime seizures in the last decade, spokesman Carlos Vallecillo said.

Vallecillo said the group laundered money through companies and property, but did not specify which drug cartel the group belonged to.

The agents detained a local police official, a Honduran civilian, and two Colombian pilots, he added.

The Mexican government's campaign to tame its drug cartels has driven Mexican drug traffickers to set up shop in Honduras. Colombian Cartels also operate in the country.

More than 8,000 unaccompanied migrant youths ? mostly from Central America -- have been taken into custody this year, double the number taken into custody at this time last year. NBC's Mark Potter reports.

Criminal violence in the Central American nation has escalated thanks in part to the Mexican cartels' presence. According to the United Nations, Honduras has the highest per capita homicide rate in the world, with 86 homicides for every 100,000 inhabitants.?

Tesla Model S price hike incoming, current reservations can dodge the increase

Tesla Model S price hike incoming, current reservations can dodge the increase

Just two weeks after announcing its expectations to become cash flow positive, Tesla's clued us into an upcoming price hike for the Model S. The word is mum regarding a reason for the change and how much more customers will have to pony up for the award-winning EV, but Musk and Co. are planning to reveal more details within the next two to three weeks. As part of the price increase, the automaker will be tweaking Model S package options, making some standard features optional going forward. Model S enthusiasts with reservations will remain unaffected by the price and package changes so long as they configure and finalize their cars "within a fair, predefined timeframe" before the heftier price tag goes into effect. Likewise, those who've deferred their reservations will have a similar period of time to finalize their order and escape the higher asking price.

Nexus 4 shown working on Canadian LTE through simple carrier menu code video

Want LTE on your new Nexus 4? Well, you might have to move country. Unless it's some elaborate post-Thanksgiving hoax from our Canadian neighbors, several Telus customers have demonstrated that the LTE chip hiding inside the Nexus 4 does work, and have connected to some data speeds resembling a 4G connection. This was enabled through the test menu, accessed by dialing "*#*#4636#*".

Tapping on the preferred network type option, you can select either LTE on its own, or a mix of LTE, GSM and CDMA. According to the videos, the Google phone then taps into your carrier's LTE network if Band 4 is available, and you're good to go. We've so far been unable to replicate it in the UK, which doesn't use the same LTE Band 4 (AWS 2100 / 1700MHz) of Canadian carriers Bell, Rogers and Telus. We have also tested this with AT&T's LTE, but had no luck there either -- we tried it in a Band 17 area, not a Band 4 area (which is less common). This is, however, great news for T-Mobile customers as this is precisely the type of LTE they'll be getting very soon. But for now, there's two working videos already doing the rounds from Canada and we've included them both below.

[Thanks Kaung]

M23, the eight-month-old rebel group made up of soldiers who defected from the Congolese army, has pushed beyond Goma, the bustling regional capital of eastern Congo, which fell to the fighters earlier this week.

On Friday, the rebels patrolled the town of Sake, the next town on the road south from Goma. They manned checkpoints, drank vodka in local bars and let the corpses of Congolese soldiers rot in the streets. One of the soldier's bodies bore an execution-style bullet wound to the temple.

AP photojournalist Jerome Delay is in the region covering the conflict, and has been witness to tens of thousands of civilians fleeing along a stretch of road to Goma, carrying mattresses and cooking pots on their heads, as well as live chickens, goats, and babies bundled on their backs. The town of Sake was nearly deserted. A lone father returned to his empty house. He had fled on Thursday when the shooting erupted, but lost track of his four children in the scramble to get out of town. The youngest are just 2 and 4 years old, he said.

Italian journalists to strike over defamation bill

ROME (Reuters) - Italian journalists plan to strike next week to protest against a law that would send them to jail for defamation but would let editors off with a fine, the journalists' union said on Thursday.

The Senate earlier passed an amendment to a bill that would set a maximum sentence of a year in jail for anyone convicted of defamation, while editors-in-chief and managing editors face a maximum fine of 50,000 euros ($64,400) or 20,000 euros respectively.

The measure must be approved by the Chamber of Deputies to become law. Italy has more than 20,000 full-time reporters, according to the Journalists' Guild.

Franco Siddi, secretary general of the union, said in a statement that there must be "an immediate and strong reaction by all of Italian journalism against the dark page written today at the Senate".

Debate over Italy's already severe defamation penalties was ignited in September when Alessandro Sallusti, editor-in-chief of the newspaper owned by four-time Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's brother, was sentenced to 14 months in prison for a libellous article printed in 2007, when he was in charge of another newspaper.

That prompted both President Giorgio Napolitano and Justice Minister Paola Severino to say they agreed that sanctions for defamation should be reduced.

But a series of scandals have hit several lawmakers, who have been openly resentful of the treatment they received in the media, prompting many Senators to support the amendment that would put reporters in prison.

What the business traveler knows: You can be plenty thankful at a ...

International business travelers often have to eat alone. This can be especially annoying during the holiday season, when the boughs of holly in the lobby make it that much harder for you to try to look serious, and not just sad, when you?re sitting with a laptop going over an Excel spreadsheet.

For Thanksgiving, many upscale hotels all over the world offer special Thanksgiving menus, including the Manhattan Grill at the Grand Hyatt Dubai. According to restaurant hostess Olga Pikina, they?re serving a five-course dinner:

Artichoke with garlic croutons, pumpkin soup, pan-seared swordfish, spiced apple sorbet, and for the main course, a Butterball turkey imported from America. For dessert a pecan tart. Sounds comforting, authentic, and homey.

But that kind of makes it even less tempting to show up alone, as evidenced by the reservation record. Of the 29 reservations the Grand Hyatt Dubai has booked for Thanksgiving, Pikina says: ?None of them are for tables of one.?

At many hotels, solo travelers end up at the hotel bar. Perhaps they?re hoping to run into like-minded people and compare notes, business traveler to business traveler, like about which hotel in Cairo makes the best Tom Collins. But this isn?t always possible. The Savoy?s famous American Bar, according the hotel?s spokesman Brett Perkins, does not have much of a bar area. ?Bizarrely, with the layout of [the American Bar], the actual bar is very small. I think it?s four seats.? The rest of the American Bar is ?all individual tables.? That?s not to be confused with a table for one.

Nonetheless, said Perkins, people traveling alone need not despair, even if they end up staying in their rooms. There?s always room service, plus, ?All suite guests have a Savoy butler.?

At the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, the staff try to be very attentive to the needs of guests traveling alone. ?In the gallery, there are musicians from 5 pm onward, so it?s quite a nice, agreeable ambiance even if you are alone,? says spokeswoman H?loise Barret. She also says a lot of solo travelers take advantage of the hotel spa, where one has to be alone anyway, and if you want, ?We can also have a masseuse come directly to your room.?

All that said, some people prefer dining alone. Quartz spoke to a few seasoned international travelers to get their input on whether eating alone in a foreign country, on the holidays or otherwise, is something one ever gets used to.

Diane Johnson (American living in Paris), author of the bestselling novels Le Mariage and Le Divorce, screenwriter for the film The Shining.

I always sort of enjoy [dining alone] in a nice restaurant; I have to admit. I take a book, have a nice wine, talk to the waiter about the dishes. I think the new electronic reading devices will be perfect for woman alone-dining, a little more covert than a book. In France, a woman having dinner alone seems quite welcome, but it?s fair to note that in the U.S., she?s more welcome in hotel restaurants than in other [kinds of restaurants].

Nicolas Rimbal (French), poet and screenwriter in Paris, France.

Nicolas Rimbal

I travel alone a lot, because it?s hard to find a traveling companion for several months at a stretch. When I?m dining alone in Asia, it?s always a pleasure because they have many boui-boui [little restaurants] where you can eat quickly. They?re generally quite good and sometimes you?re even seated on the street. You can watch the passersby and benefit from the spectacle of daily life. It?s a rich experience because you can take the time to notice details and the commonalities or differences with other countries you?ve already been to. Sometimes you can converse with your neighbors at your table. If they are Western, I listen in a bit. If they are talking about a particular destination, I ask questions about it.

In Paris, however, I rarely dine alone in restaurant. I always go with friends. The rhythm is different; dining is a more social activity. And the more high-class the restaurant, the more incongruous it is to come alone. Some waiter will always look at you funny, as if they?re trying to figure out where to squeeze you in. This ostracism is probably reserved for Parisians, because I?ve noticed waiters are less critical of tourists.

Oliver Farry (Irish), TV journalist at France 24 in Paris.

Oliver Farry Oliver Farry

I?m quite fond of dining alone, and I?d sooner do it than tag along with someone just for the sake of having company, but it?s usually more

enjoyable if you are sitting at a bar. The Japanese and the Spanish have long understood this. That way, you get your space, and you are not needlessly using up valuable dining real estate. You also get a better level of service and a more immediate rapport with the staff. Most importantly, you tend to feel you have a more natural place in the dining-room landscape.

Terry Thomas?(American), teacher at the Colegio Nueva Granda in Bogot?, Colombia.

Terry Thomas

I love to eat alone, with a good book to read. Maybe it?s that I have four kids and dinner for me is all about jumping up and getting something, or cleaning up a spill, or resolving disputes. But as much as I love my family, a meal alone is a treat. I don?t feel lonely. If someone tries to talk to me, I see it as an interruption of some very cherished Alone Time. Does this mean I am curmudgeonly?

9.2-million-year-old rhino skull preserved by instant 'cooking to death' in volcanic ash

ScienceDaily (Nov. 21, 2012) ? Less than 2% of Earth's fossils are preserved in volcanic rock, but researchers have identified a new one: the skull of a rhino that perished in a volcanic eruption 9.2 million years ago.

The find is described in a paper published Nov. 21 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Pierre-Olivier Antoine and colleagues from the University of Montpellier, France.

The fossil, found in Turkey, is thought to be that of a large two-horned rhino common in the Eastern Mediterranean region during that period. According to the researchers, unusual features of the preserved skull suggest that the animal was 'cooked to death' at temperatures that may have approached 500? C, in a volcanic flow similar to that of the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Italy in 79 A.D.

The rhino's grisly death was near-instantaneous, and followed by severe dehydration in the extreme heat of the eruption. As the researchers describe its end, "the body was baked under a temperature approximating 400?C, then dismembered within the pyroclastic flow, and the skull separated from body." The flow of volcanic ash then moved the skull about 30 km north of the eruption site, where it was discovered by the four member research team.

Although other researchers have previously identified fossils of soft-bodied organisms preserved in volcanic ash, organic matter near an active volcanic eruption is usually quickly destroyed by the high temperatures, making a fossil such as this one extremely rare.

NHL lockout talks break off again with frustration

NEW YORK (AP) ? NHL labor talks broke off soon after they resumed Wednesday, with players maintaining their new proposal was a huge economic concession and Commissioner Gary Bettman pretty much saying the only deal he will agree to is the one management proposed last month.

On the 67th day of a lockout that already has wiped out more than a quarter of the regular season, the sides headed home for Thanksgiving with no end in sight to the sport's fourth work stoppage. The union's negotiating committee planned to brief players and get back in touch with management on Friday.

"When you're dealing with a union that really isn't trying to negotiate, make any deal that we can live with for the long-term health of this game, there isn't much else you can do," Bettman said outside the league's Manhattan office when questioned by a fan, 41-year-old Jaymes Hall of Lancaster, Pa. "And we're hoping that with the passage of time, the players' association will come to realize that what we have proposed has been more than fair. And the fact that we're keeping this proposal on the table, when it was contingent on an 82-game season, should be evidence of our desire to get this done the right way."

Informed of Bettman's comments, union head Donald Fehr said "My response is they seem to consider negotiating to be merely agreeing with them."

"We've identified what's important to players, but they seem to be so far at least unwilling to treat those concerns in a serious way," Fehr said in a telephone interview.

Players made what both sides called a comprehensive proposal. Fehr said the sides were $182 million apart in a five-year deal, which comes to $1.2 million annually for each of the 30 teams.

"On the big things there was as of today no reciprocity in any meaningful sense, no movement on the players' share, no movement on salary-arbitration eligibility, no movement on free agency eligibility, no agreement on a pension plan," Fehr said as he left the talks.

Management wants to increase eligibility for free agency to 28 years of age or eight seasons of NHL service, up from 27 or 7.

Management also proposed Wednesday adding a year of service for salary arbitration eligibility, hiking it from 1-4 to 2-5 years of service, depending on the age a player signs, a person familiar with the bargaining said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because that detail wasn't announced.

"There seems to be a lot of spinning and gamesmanship going on," Bettman said.

Winnipeg defenseman Ron Hainsey, among nine players at the bargaining, said the union was "disappointed with the response."

"There was no meaningful move in our direction on anything that we would consider," he said.

Fehr nearly said players found the day's two bargaining sessions, which totaled 2? hours, to be a waste of time.

"A lot of the people that were there today, given the response we got, thought they had a lot better things to do on the night before Thanksgiving than hear what we got," he said.

The NHL on Oct. 16 proposed a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue, down from the players' 57 percent portion of $3.3 billion last season. With guaranteed contracts likely to push the players' share over the halfway mark at the start of the next deal, management wants that money to come out of future years to bring the overall percentage down to an even split over the length of an agreement.

Players previously had proposed they receive a guaranteed amount of income each year.

"Gary said we were $900 million or a $1 billion apart," Fehr said, referring to the gap over a five-year deal. "At the moment we are exactly $182 million apart."

Fehr said players proposed they get $393 million over the length of the deal, while the NHL is at $211 million. Management wants a seven-year deal, which the union says is too long because less than half the current players will be active by the last season.

"To expect our best economic proposal to get better as the damage continues to increase isn't particularly realistic," Bettman said. "From an economic standpoint, we've given what we have to give. It was our best offer. And again, put it in the context that the business is probably losing between $18 and $20 million a day and the players are losing between $8 and $10 million a day."

This is the league's third lockout since 1994. The first settled on Jan. 11 and the last one led to Bettman announcing the cancellation of the 2004-05 season on Feb. 15.

The league has canceled 326 games through Nov. 30 plus the Jan. 1 Winter Classic between Toronto and Detroit at Ann Arbor, Mich. More cancellations are coming.

"That's something that we're going to have to look at on a daily basis," Bettman said. "I think that becomes inevitable as time goes on."
