Degree and area of specialization:
Bachelor's (Master's Preferred). Acceptable degree areas: Social Justice Education, Cultural/Ethnic /Area Studies, Student Affairs/Higher Education or closely related area.

Minimum number of years and type of experience*:
The successful candidate must (a) have a minimum of 2-3 years of direct work within diverse people of color and/or student communities; designing, organizing and facilitating workshops or training and (b) exhibit a history of and commitment to creating a more socially just world; particularly around the intersections of racial justice with social justice issues concerning ethnicity, class, gender, sexual orientation, environment, etc.

  • Note: may be established by a combination of professional, para-professional or other substantively related practical experience.

MSC Mission & Direction:
In keeping with the Center's historic legacy, the primary mission of the Multicultural Student Center is: To collaboratively strengthen and sustain an inclusive campus where all students, particularly students of color and other historically under-served students, are engaged and can realize an authentic Wisconsin Experience. We accomplish this by:
  • Cultivating and modeling a safe, inclusive and socially just environment for all members of the UW-Madison community
  • Centering our work in a social justice framework
  • Promoting personal, social and academic development, integrative learning, and professional success
  • Providing support and creating a sense of belonging for students of color and other historically underserved students
  • Organizing and facilitating a variety of diversity and social justice programs and discussions for the entire campus community
  • Collaborating with academic departments and other campus partners to address emerging and lingering racial inequalities on the UW-Madison campus
Principal duties:
This position reports to the Associate Director of the MSC and serves-as the primary facilitator/trainer of the Institute for Justice Education and Transformation (IJET).
IJET is a curriculum-based initiative housed within the UW-Madison Multicultural Student Center. The IJET provides and supports campus-wide opportunities for deep reflection and action around issues of Social Justice for multicultural students and their allies. This initiative includes several entry level (101) and intermediate (201) social justice workshops offered throughout the academic year, a Social Justice Speakers and Trainers Series, and ongoing support for students involved in various campus and community social justice efforts. Our goals are:
  • To develop multi-issue (intersectional) social justice literacy
  • To celebrate and reclaim the profound legacy of student movements
  • To enhance students' capacities to build effective and sustainable coalitions, organizations, and/or movements in their contemporary context
  • To foster and support transformative leaders working towards an increasingly equitable and just society.
As a social justice educator on the staff of the MSC the principal duties of the position revolve around being a campus resource for social justice information, community building, program planning, assessment, and demonstrating commitment to the organizational success of both the MSC and the Division of Student Life. Our vision is to establish the IJET Social Justice Research & Resource Center
Serve as a Campus Resource
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the current situation of social justice efforts on the UW-Madison campus, and past initiatives. This includes knowing basic demographic information of various student populations on campus, and understanding the basic history of the different social justice movements on the UW-Madison campus.
  • Provide leadership and information about resources that facilitate the University's responsiveness to social justice issues and concerns.
  • Maintain and expand our collection of social justice resource materials
Community Building
  • Develop and maintain cross-campus relationships
  • Create and support opportunities for students to build community with one another across various social justice issues and concerns
  • Develop/maintain relationships with Madison/Dane County social justice organizations and initiatives and help our students connect with local social justice issues and concerns
  • Cultivate and maintain an effective, collaborative and engaged network of staff, faculty, students and other relevant on-and-off campus resources that share a commitment to working on issues of social justice.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with (local, state and regional) organizations-to help bridge the relationship between the University and the Madison community
  • Dialogue and collaborate with other campuses involved in social justice education work
Program Planning
  • Add to and maintain the quality of IJET curriculum
  • Assist in the development of the MSC annual theme and annual IJET programs.
  • Plan, implement, evaluate and provide quality programs and services which are designed to increase multi-issue social justice literacy, competency, and awareness;
  • Foster social justice, improve campus climate and enhance the involvement and academic/personal success of students of color, LGBTQ students, women and other historically marginalized groups
  • Collaborate with other units in our Division, and other campus and community partners to provide creative avenues for students to develop hard skills and around social justice issues.
Development and Assessment
  • Identify funding resources for social justice programming initiatives
  • Help develop grant proposals and solicit funds for social justice programming initiatives
  • Develop evaluation and assessment tools for program initiatives
Commitment to MSC and Division Student Life
  • Assist in the development of MSC annual reports
  • Serve as a contributing, active and positive member of the MSC staff team and be committed to the organizational success of the Multicultural Student Center
  • Demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive living-learning-working community and demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively and respectfully with other Dean of Students divisional members and to serve on Divisional committees
  • Take personal responsibility for fostering a positive workplace climate and make ethical decisions which promote organizational and institutional success
  • Perform other duties as assigned
