Exciting mix of music and laughs | Local | Entertainment | The ...

Two London region theatre festivals have announced their 2013 seasons, which include a healthy mix of comedy and musicals.

Port Stanley Theatre Festival is bringing back the hit musical review, Back In ?59, directed by Thom Currie and choreographer by Stephanie Graham to open the season May 28.

Henry and Alice: Into the Wild, the sequel to Sexy Laundry by Michele Riml which opens June 12, follows Henry and Alice on a camping trip where they ?discover the delights of camping, army rations, motorcycles and skinny dipping.?

On July 10, the festival will host the world premiere of a new Canadian musical, Not In My Backyard, with book and lyrics by Rachael and Brett McCaig and music by Anthony Bastianon, The show is described as ?political satire, love among the vegetables and some hard lines drawn in the dirt.?

Artistic director Simon Joynes? comedy Mini Putt opens July 31. The play tells the story of Frank ?a man with a vision ? and a lot of fixing up to do.? In a last-ditch effort at success, the ?down and out bachelor buys a derelict mini putt and tries to give it new life, while looking for love, redemption and power tools in all the wrong places.?

Of course, what would a Port Stanley season be without a Norm Foster comedy and 2013 will be no different as Foster?s classic Drinking Alone closes off the season. The show is about ?Trivial Pursuit gone bad, a role-playing first-time escort, a hard-drinking news anchor and way too much family history.?

Meanwhile, in Petrolia, the Victoria Playhouse has another grand season planned, including television?s Brady Bunch mom Florence Henderson?s acclaimed show, All the Lives of Me ? A Musical Journey.

Henderson?s show will close the season with an Oct. 8 opening with songs from her starring roles in classic Broadway musicals, as well as personal anecdotes of a life on Broadway and the Brady set.

But there is a beginning to the season, which opens May 15 with director David Rogers? Fiddler on the Loose, starring Jesse Grandmont, Diane Chase, Stephanie Cadman and Janelle Murray. With musical arrangements by Mark Payne, the talented Grandmont explores country, Celtic and classical arrangements with a string of divas in singing and dancing.

Comedy follows on June 12 with Jonathan Ellul and Mark Weatherley starring in the Neil Simon classic, The Odd Couple, directed by Linda Kash.

The small-theatre classic musical, The FANTASTICKS, opens July 10 with David Rogers starring as the narrator, El Gallo, taking the audience on an unusual romantic, but funny, journey under the moonlight in a show that features the hit song, Try to Remember. The shows also stars London?s Rebecca McCauley (who starred as Eliza Doolittle in The Grand Theatre?s High School Project, My Fair Lady in September) along with Jonathan Gybers with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt.

Ken Ludwig?s hilarious Fox on the Fairway opens Aug 7, starring Jonathan Ellul, Ashley Magwood and Michael Hogeveen and directed by David Rogers. It?s a farce about ?love, life and man?s eternal love affair with gold.? It includes the expected mistaken identities, slamming doors, and ?over-the-top romantic shenanigans.?

Music and classic moments are celebrated in Hollywood Sings, which opens Sept. 4, starring Susan Gilmour, June Crowley, Rebecca Poff, Stephen Patterson and Brian Belleth. This show celebrates the golden age of the movie musical with ?style, class, humour and in glorious gala fashion. Classic tunes include Moon River, As Time Goes By, Singing in the Rain and My Heart Will Go On.
