Keep an Eye on Eye-Tracking Technology

You can literally look before you leap when playing a video game using the EyeDock, an accessory for tablets or smartphones. This technology controls the device by eye movement alone. Scroll down to the next page to continue reading something without using your hands.

The Eye Tribe, a startup of four Danish men, experienced in eye tracking and gaze interaction, presented a model of the Windows 8 tablet using the EyeDock in June 2012. Team members have either earned their Ph.D. or are working on it, with extensive research backgrounds in these fields.

The device easily plugs into a USB port. Its software enables the user to activate the desired command by looking at it, using the camera in the smartphone or tablet and infrared LED.

With a recent investment of $800,000 from European sources, The Eye Tribe hopes to bring the innovation to the market in 2013.

As students at the IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark, three team members participated in researching ways for the disabled to use electronic devices at less cost, using the eyes. The resulting ITU Gaze Tracker incorporates a web camera to help those without hand control use computers and allow participation in social networks, selecting and watching videos, etc.

The team, at this time called Senseye, took the next step at a startup boot camp in June 2011, developing a USB-based product using eye movements, with applications for market research.

Javier San Agustin, an Eye Tribe co-founder, told RESCUECOM that the EyeDock ?software is not targeted specifically to people with disabilities, although they will of course benefit from having eye control built into a device. For able-bodied persons, eye control offers a new input modality that can enhance interaction when combined with. . .touch, tilt or buttons.?

Will a stranger behind you be able to control your device? San Agustin replied, ?The software automatically gives control to the person closest to the device.?

Smartphones and tablets also fall under the heading of computer repair and computer support.
