YOU CAN EAT

Wow, I can?t believe it ? my 2nd award! A huge Thank You to Kylie of The Life of Kylie, of recent Freshly Pressed fame! In case you missed it, check out her featured post, Toenails and Kisses.

Well, now I?ve got this new award with a its own set of rules?I am supposed to tell you something ?badass? about myself (pardon the language, but them?s the rules). Ha. I?m afraid of the dark. I try to never get too near metal pipes because I?m terrified they?ll spontaneously explode in my face. Once when I was cutting a potato, I accidentally cut into the very top layer of my skin ? ya know, the part with absolutely no feeling? I almost fainted. So, as you can imagine, I?m having a hard time coming up anything badass. Although I did once throw a drink in a man?s face?does that count?

So, now that I have:
1. Thanked, and linked back to, the awesome blogger who nominated me for this award, and
2. Told you something slightly badass about myself,
It?s time for #3:

Nominate Other People! Any amount of my choosing.

1. The Woman and the Wheat I *just* discovered this blog, and it is so beautiful and inspiring! Jane not only loves to bake, she makes a habit of baking twice what she needs so she can share the extra with others.

2. AMoonFull It may be a simple thing, but I really love the new POST IT Wednesdays. I think it?s because I?ve always had a soft spot for handwritten notes. I have a little canister filled with things written on napkins, and at work I have a stash of post-its with random notes people left on my desk. I really do look forward to checking this blog every Wednesday!

3. Recipes Happen Another blog I just started following recently. So far I haven?t had time to do much more than look at the photos, but they are REALLY lovely photos! The soft pretzels posted yesterday look amazing.

4. Good Clean Food Ummm?a vegan recipe for Cheesy, Creamy, Bacony, Potato Soup. Need I say more?

Now on to some food!

First of all, I mentioned the Dormition Fast a few times during the past couple weeks. While, yesterday, August 15, was the Feast Day at the end of the fast. The day of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the Theotokos. So, it was fitting, I think, that my BFF was in town and we met for dinner at our favorite restaurant in the whole wide world. At least it is my favorite ? isn?t it yours, too, L? I know, I already posted about Little Africa not so long ago, but I?ll probably post something every time I have a meal there. And last night was so amazing?we decided to get the

ALL

YOU

CAN

EAT special. It works like this: Each person will normally order a combo, which consists of three items, for $9 (really you don?t order separately because you?re going to share, but you get the idea). Now, once you order a combo, every additional item is $2. Suppose you want two combos for yourself. If you order two combos, that?s $15 BUT you get can order the All You Can Eat special for $13.50! And knowing I?ve paid for All I Can Eat, I really eat all I can eat. We cleared this platter and then had another one brought out! We did take some home, but I ate my leftovers before I went to bed.

The other day I stopped at Tete?s house after work and she gave me some mujaddara with tons of fried onions. Usually we eat it with hummus and salata (Syrian salad, a simple salad with olive oil and lemon juice dressing). I was fresh out of hummus and too lazy to make a salad tonight, but there is one other way I love to eat it.

With pickles!

First I spoon out some of the juice and put it over the lentils. Lots of it.

Then I like to slice and dice some of the pickle?

and sprinkle it right on top.

Of course I also need plenty of fried onions on top. I wondered if it?s a very weird habit, eating the mujaddara with pickles, so I googled it. I was surprised to see I?m not alone! If you have never tried it, I highly recommend it. I?ll have to post a recipe in the near future, sometime before the next fast. This is usually considered a Lenten food, but it is full of olive oil, so I still think it?s a good way to break a fast?at least for a vegan.
