Caltech Rated World's Top University

The California Institute of Technology has been rated and announced as the top university in the world for 2012-2013.

The World University Rankings, just released by the Times Higher Education magazine in London, placed the California Institute of Technology in the global #1 position, ahead of the UK's ultra-prestigious University of Oxford.

"We always try to recruit exceptional faculty and exceptional students," said Dr. Jean-Lou Chameau, the Caltech president. "We encourage them to look at big questions, important scientific issues.? It has resulted in game-changing types of discoveries."

The pride of Pasadena, the California Institute of Technology is also home to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Palo Alto's Stanford University is tied for second place, and the University of California has five campuses in the global top 50 - UC Berkeley, UC Los Angeles, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego and UC Davis.

The annual Times Higher Education World University Rankings is an international evaluation of universities published by the British magazine Times Higher Education with data supplied by Thomson Reuters.

It is the most comprehensive and meticulously calibrated university ranking system in the world, utilizing 13 distinctive performance indicators to examine a university's strengths and global competitiveness.

Designations are measured by factors which include funding for research, faculty publication, the influence of research as measured by citations, the global diversity of faculty and students, and how many doctorate degrees are awarded.
